Being an Optician assists and advises customers in selecting frames based on their prescription, lifestyle needs, and style preferences. Inspects lenses for quality, fits and adjusts eyewear, and repairs eyewear as needed. Additionally, Optician instructs customer on correct eyeglasses and contact lens care and maintenance. We are looking for an experienced optician to fill a FT position who is very friendly, professional, outgoing, caring, precise, detail oriented and computer savvy. He or She must have excellent communication skills and the ability to multi-task. As our practice believes in providing the best possible care to our patients, maximizing a patient’s insurance coverage relative to all appropriate testing and benefits is of highest importance. Optical, sales and insurance filing/billing experience is therefore REQUIRED. Prior use of Officemate would be very beneficial but can be learned.
Job Responsibilities:
Communicate with all patients about their vision/medical insurance plan and benefits where applicable
Handle all patient insurance coverage questions
Verify and obtain pre-authorization of patient insurance benefits
Post and Collect all patient payments for optical materials and services
Bill all participating insurance plans and third party payors
Demonstrate an appropriate level of knowledge using the practice’s Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system (i.e. Officemate and Examwriter)
Troubleshoot and solve patient eyewear complaints/problems
Answer phone calls
Schedule appointments for the Doctor
Competencies:
Detail Oriented - Must have the ability to adhere to all policies and procedures of the practice and those set forth by the participating insurance plans.
Communication Skills - The Optician must have the ability to effectively communicate complex plan information relative to eyewear benefits to all patients. Must also have the ability to communicate effectively and develop relationships with all patients.
Customer Oriented - The Optician will interact frequently with our patients and potential patients relative to optical devices and their insurance. As these interactions can often be stressful for the patient, approaching these exchanges in a caring and helpful way is vital.
Consistency of Work - The Optician position requires repetition of several tasks; sales, dispensing eyewear, adjusting frames, repairing frames, and verification of prescriptions. A displayed comfort level and accuracy of accomplishing tasks of this nature is required. It is critical that the optician have broad knowledge of spectacle lens and contact lens products.
Pace of the Environment - Generally, the pace of this work will change frequently from slow to fast with handling patient queries in-person, via telephone and by electronic means. Plus, there is a fair amount of desk work (e.g. ordering frames and/or lenses) that must be accomplished for each patient interaction. The ability to manage work flow appropriately is required.
