Takes patient history, conducts visual acuity screenings, and performs various technical procedures, including refractometry, tonometry, lensometry, and keratometry. Being an Ophthalmic Technician prepares patients for exams and procedures. Operates, maintains, and sanitizes ophthalmic equipment and instruments. Additionally, Ophthalmic Technician may assist physicians in performing minor surgical and laser procedures. May dispense contact lenses. Typically requires an associate degree. May require Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA). May require Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT). Typically reports to a manager. Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Ophthalmic Technician to join our team. As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will play a crucial role in assisting the ophthalmologists in providing quality eye care to our patients. Your expertise and attention to detail will contribute to accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans.
Responsibilities:
- Perform preliminary eye examinations, including taking patient histories and documenting relevant information
- Conduct various diagnostic tests such as visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and visual field testing
- Assist with contact lens fittings and provide instructions on proper wear and care
- Administer eye medications as directed by the physician
- Prepare patients for surgical procedures, ensuring proper sterilization techniques are followed
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records in compliance with HIPAA regulations
- Educate patients on eye health, treatment options, and post-operative care instructions
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure efficient patient flow and excellent patient care
Experience:
- Previous experience as an Ophthalmic Technician or in a similar role is preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology and basic physiology is required
- Familiarity with medical coding and billing procedures is a plus
- Proficiency in using electronic medical record (EMR) systems is preferred
- Experience working in a medical office is beneficial
Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately
- Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with patients and colleagues
- Familiarity with ophthalmic equipment and instruments used in eye examinations
- Ability to perform basic vital signs measurements, such as blood pressure and pulse rate
- Understanding of HIPAA regulations to ensure patient privacy and confidentiality
