Ophthalmic Technician provides technical services to assigned ophthalmic patients and assists ophthalmologists or optometrists in the examination and treatment of eye disorders. Takes patient history, conducts visual acuity screenings, and performs various technical procedures, including refractometry, tonometry, lensometry, and keratometry. Being an Ophthalmic Technician prepares patients for exams and procedures. Operates, maintains, and sanitizes ophthalmic equipment and instruments. Additionally, Ophthalmic Technician may assist physicians in performing minor surgical and laser procedures. May dispense contact lenses. Typically requires an associate degree. May require Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA). May require Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT). Typically reports to a manager. Ophthalmic Technician/Scribe

  • POSITION SUMMARY:

    We are looking for a hard-working and caring candidate to start or continue their career working alongside a retina surgeon in a busy, dynamic and ethical practice that delivers high quality patient centered care. Prepare to join a small, efficient, well-oiled team that treats a variety of vitreoretinal conditions in our community, including Age-Related Macular Degeneration in an elderly population and diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachments in a broad, younger population.

    The position is a combination of an ophthalmic technician and medical scribe. While ophthalmic experience is strongly preferred, we are willing to train motivated and eager candidates. The job entails scribing for one doctor into an easy-to-use retina focused EMR (Nextech, formerly MDMDIntelleSys) as well as managing patient flow, procedure preparation (intravitreal injections, lasers, cryopexy), and ophthalmic imaging (OCT and fluorescein angiography). We will train on the Optos camera and Heidelberg OCT for those with limited experience. Basic knowledge of patient screening required.

    ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Assist in coordination of scheduling of patient appointments and surgeries. Interview patients and document ocular and medical histories.

    Perform a variety of routine tests using ophthalmic instruments that provide diagnostic information including, but not limited to, intraocular pressures, basic motility, and fundus photography.

    Assist the physician during diagnostic and minor surgical procedures, including instrumentation, sterile preparations and documentation.

    Administer topical medications or diagnostic drugs as required by the provider for testing or treatment.

    Prepare and position patient for diagnostic tests and procedures. Assist the physician with patient education pertaining to the treatment prescribed.

    Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

    Document accurate information in the medical record.

    Prepare procedure and exam rooms; inventory equipment and supplies; replenish supplies and maintain equipment.

    The job is based in Hamden, CT with weekly travel between our New Haven and Madison offices. One week of call per month (4x weekends per year).

    Salary is very competitive based on experience.

    QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

    • High school diploma or GED required.
    • Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Proficient in computers and relevant software applications and practice management technology.
    • Ability to achieve team goals while demonstrating organizational values and utilizing resources responsibly.
    • Ability to be proactive and take initiative.
    • Possession of strong organizational skills.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication, as well as, exceptional interpersonal communication skills.
    • Exhibit high level of quality through attention to detail and monitoring of work.
    • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.

    WORK ENVIROMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Work is performed in a medical office setting.
    • Physical demands of position: must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time, must have manual dexterity to work with ophthalmic equipment and maneuver a patient if in a wheelchair, must be able to accurately type information into EMR system, and must be able to have face to face conversation with patients and staff
