Ophthalmic Technician provides technical services to assigned ophthalmic patients and assists ophthalmologists or optometrists in the examination and treatment of eye disorders. Takes patient history, conducts visual acuity screenings, and performs various technical procedures, including refractometry, tonometry, lensometry, and keratometry. Being an Ophthalmic Technician prepares patients for exams and procedures. Operates, maintains, and sanitizes ophthalmic equipment and instruments. Additionally, Ophthalmic Technician may assist physicians in performing minor surgical and laser procedures. May dispense contact lenses. Typically requires an associate degree. May require Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA). May require Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT). Typically reports to a manager.     We are a fast-paced, growing optometry office that has been serving Jefferson County since 2003. We just recently remodeled and expanded our facility. We strive to have wonderful relationships with our patients. We value associates who have a passion for patient care and work well within a team environment. Prior experience is a plus, but not necessary as we are willing to train someone with great customer service skills, an enthusiastic personality and the ability to learn quickly. Must be available to work during our business hours (Monday&Tuesday 8-5, Wednesday 8-1, Thursday 8-5)

    Basic Function:

    This role assists the Optometrist with all types of eye exams and appointments to keep the office running smoothly and efficiently. This includes a variety of patient care tasks, including preparation of patients to be seen by the doctor, performance of diagnostic tests, and appropriate documentation. Optometric Technicians play a key role in ensuring that our patients have a rewarding experience.

    This position also provides office support such as verifying insurance benefits, filing claims, billing, and assisting patients with appointments.

    Duties and Responsibilities: Essential Functions

    • Review patient charts to ensure completeness and accuracy of information. Perform patient medical history and testing required by the type of eye exam scheduled.
    • Be able to perform basic visual acuity testing, ocular muscle testing, pupil assessment, confrontation visual fields and gross external exam, and administer diagnostic tests.
    • Assist with in-office procedures.
    • Build strong relationships.
    • Provide exceptional patient care by creating a patient service experience that is phenomenal for each and every patient.
    • Assist and educate patients with the selection of frames, lenses, and lens enhancements based on the patient's prescription and specific needs as prescribed by the doctor.
    • Process eyeglasses, which includes pricing to patients, measuring, collecting money, coding and documenting patient charts.
    • Repairs and adjusts glasses while ensuring patient satisfaction.
    • Maintains clean, organized and stocked eyeglass displays.
    • Helps assist patients with purchase of contact lenses and other products.
    • Dispensing of eyewear to patients.
    • Create patient orders and fee slips.
    • Administer dilation drops and perform testing as needed.
    • Insurance filing and post bills, receipts and invoices
    • Assist patients with contact lens insertion and removal.
    • Perform a variety of office administrative duties

    Performance Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and Ability

    • Ability to perform preliminary and special testing for the Optometrist.
    • Ability to sell and service eyeglasses and products with a commitment to provide excellent customer service.
    • Skill to problem solve and provide patient satisfaction while maintaining composure and offering appropriate assistance.
    • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served.
    • Extremely efficient, organized and resourceful.
    • Must be flexible and able to function well in a fast-paced environment
    • Good interpersonal skills to deal with many personalities.
    • Strong decision making skills
    • Shall be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with patients and other staff members. (Fluent in Spanish also a plus)
    • Ability to pay attention to detail.
