Ophthalmic Technician provides technical services to assigned ophthalmic patients and assists ophthalmologists or optometrists in the examination and treatment of eye disorders. Takes patient history, conducts visual acuity screenings, and performs various technical procedures, including refractometry, tonometry, lensometry, and keratometry. Being an Ophthalmic Technician prepares patients for exams and procedures. Operates, maintains, and sanitizes ophthalmic equipment and instruments. Additionally, Ophthalmic Technician may assist physicians in performing minor surgical and laser procedures. May dispense contact lenses. Typically requires an associate degree. May require Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA). May require Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT). Typically reports to a manager. JOB SUMMARY: Performs basic preliminary screening exam on patient under the direct supervision of ophthalmologist/optician. Provides the provider with pertinent information for ophthalmic exam and care of the patient.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Performs basic preliminary testing including but not limited to obtaining visual acuity, lensometry, measure and record intraocular pressure using tonopen, administers topical eye medications per physician order in preparation for ophthalmic exam, obtains vital signs as needed documenting in EMR. 2. Records relevant detailed patient medical/ocular history, confirms allergies and updates medications. 3. Performs Automated Visual Field Testing. Demonstrates ability to troubleshoot visual field equipment problems and begin repair process following procedures. 4. Ensures exam rooms and lanes are stocked with needed supplies. 5. Participates in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, required continuing education, and CPR certification during employment. 6. Escorts patients to exam rooms and screening areas in department 7. Demonstrates dedication to patient service and care by serving as a role model in always delivering quality patient care to all patients. 8. Performs other job-related duties incidental to the work described here in and based on a non-certified ophthalmic assistant.
