Ophthalmic Technician provides technical services to assigned ophthalmic patients and assists ophthalmologists or optometrists in the examination and treatment of eye disorders. Takes patient history, conducts visual acuity screenings, and performs various technical procedures, including refractometry, tonometry, lensometry, and keratometry. Being an Ophthalmic Technician prepares patients for exams and procedures. Operates, maintains, and sanitizes ophthalmic equipment and instruments. Additionally, Ophthalmic Technician may assist physicians in performing minor surgical and laser procedures. May dispense contact lenses. Typically requires an associate degree. May require Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA). May require Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT). Typically reports to a manager.   • POSITION SUMMARY

    The Ophthalmic Technician conduct measurements and tests that provides the Physician with the information needed to arrive at a diagnosis and to prescribe treatment. The Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for required documentation in compliance with the policies and provide excellent patient services. You MUST be ok with traveling between Bethesda MD and Vienna VA.

    ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Take an ocular and systemic history and accurately record visual acuity.
    • Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information. Performs testing required by type of exam scheduled, patient complaint and history.
    • Acts as scribe while physician examines patient entering data into electronic medical records.
    • Performs lensometry, automated refractometry, slit lamp examination including applanation tonometry, anterior chamber angle assessment and gross external exam, ocular muscle motility and balance testing, assess pupils and confrontation visual fields.
    • Administers diagnostic tests – OCT, automated visual fields, photography, pachymetry, biometry
    • Performs manifest refraction
    • Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications
    • Assists with in-office procedures ensuring proper informed consent is obtained, sets up and cleans up from procedures.
    • Assists in training of other ophthalmic assistants.
    • Assists with patient education.
    • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the work day.
    • Complies with all practice procedures and protocols. Complies with all State and Federal regulations. Understands and accepts responsibility to report potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer.
    • Maintains positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.

    POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

    Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED). Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline highly preferred.

    Certificates & Licenses
    Certified Ophthalmic Assistant

    Experience: 2-4 years of prior ophthalmic assistant experience

    Computer Skills

    ·         Facile with Microsoft Products

    ·         Within 4 weeks of hire must be facile with Athena PMS and practice based EMR 

    WORK ENVIRONMENT
    An office environment with controlled atmosphere. Possible exposure to staff or patients with communicable diseases and blood borne pathogens.

    Sense of Sound (normal range of hearing and vision)

    Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (gloves, face mask, eye shield, gown)
