Ophthalmic Technician provides technical services to assigned ophthalmic patients and assists ophthalmologists or optometrists in the examination and treatment of eye disorders. Takes patient history, conducts visual acuity screenings, and performs various technical procedures, including refractometry, tonometry, lensometry, and keratometry. Being an Ophthalmic Technician prepares patients for exams and procedures. Operates, maintains, and sanitizes ophthalmic equipment and instruments. Additionally, Ophthalmic Technician may assist physicians in performing minor surgical and laser procedures. May dispense contact lenses. Typically requires an associate degree. May require Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA). May require Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT). Typically reports to a manager. ```Duties```
- Perform initial patient assessments, including taking vital signs and documenting medical history
- Assist ophthalmologists in various procedures and examinations
- Administer eye drops and medications as directed by the physician
- Conduct diagnostic tests, such as visual acuity, tonometry, and refraction
- Maintain accurate and detailed patient records using electronic medical record (EMR) systems
- Clean and sterilize ophthalmic instruments and equipment
- Educate patients on proper eye care and contact lens use
-Cross-training with front office to help whenever needed
```Qualifications```
- High school diploma or equivalent required; certification as an ophthalmic technician preferred
- Previous experience working in an ophthalmology or optometry setting is highly desirable
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology related to the eye
- Familiarity with ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and procedures
- Proficient in using electronic medical record (EMR) systems
- Understanding of HIPAA regulations and ability to maintain patient confidentiality
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment
