Ophthalmic Technician provides technical services to assigned ophthalmic patients and assists ophthalmologists or optometrists in the examination and treatment of eye disorders. Takes patient history, conducts visual acuity screenings, and performs various technical procedures, including refractometry, tonometry, lensometry, and keratometry. Being an Ophthalmic Technician prepares patients for exams and procedures. Operates, maintains, and sanitizes ophthalmic equipment and instruments. Additionally, Ophthalmic Technician may assist physicians in performing minor surgical and laser procedures. May dispense contact lenses. Typically requires an associate degree. May require Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA). May require Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT). Typically reports to a manager. DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Perform preliminary patient screenings, including taking medical histories and measuring visual acuity
- Assist ophthalmologist or optometrist with diagnostic tests and procedures
- Prepare examination rooms and sterilize equipment
- Educate patients on proper eye care and contact lens use
- Administer eye drops and medications as directed by the healthcare provider
- Maintain accurate and detailed patient records
QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
- Previous experience as an ophthalmic technician or in a related field preferred
- Knowledge of medical billing, coding, and terminology
- Familiarity with physiology and anatomy of the eye
- Strong patient care skills, including the ability to provide compassionate and attentive care
- Proficiency in using medical office software and electronic health records systems
- Understanding of HIPAA regulations and ability to maintain patient confidentiality
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to work well in a team environment
