Ophthalmic Technician provides technical services to assigned ophthalmic patients and assists ophthalmologists or optometrists in the examination and treatment of eye disorders. Takes patient history, conducts visual acuity screenings, and performs various technical procedures, including refractometry, tonometry, lensometry, and keratometry. Being an Ophthalmic Technician prepares patients for exams and procedures. Operates, maintains, and sanitizes ophthalmic equipment and instruments. Additionally, Ophthalmic Technician may assist physicians in performing minor surgical and laser procedures. May dispense contact lenses. Typically requires an associate degree. May require Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA). May require Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT). Typically reports to a manager.     OPHTHALMIC TECHNICIAN (COT, COA, OA) - DUKE EYE CENTER - DURHAM

    Occupational Summary: Assist an Eye Center physician and other technical support personnel to perform diagnostic tests necessary for evaluation of patient eye problems.

    Work Performed

    • Perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review including, but not limited to, central and peripheral visual field tests; ocular motility tests; color vision tests; pharmacological pupil tests; tonometry, tomography tests to determine intraocular pressure and pupil testing for size, equality and reaction prior to dilation.
    • Examine the cornea, lens and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note variations from normal.
    • Measure acuity of patient, with and without glasses, for distance and near vision; obtain optical and lensometry measurements to determine lens prescription and correct acuity problems; record findings on patient chart.
    • Obtain topographical measurements of the eye to include corneal diameter and curvature; Lenstar/Argos measuerments, perform visual field testing.
    • Direct the flow of patients examined by an Eye Center physician; obtain medical and personal data for patient charts; screen patients for conditions excluding ocular examination; arrange for laboratory and other tests, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies and patient admissions and surgery as requested by physician; alleviate patient and family concerns by explaining diagnostic procedures and method of treatment.
    • Calibrate and maintain all instruments used including, but not limited to bio-microscopes, lens meter, slit lamp and tonometer’s; clean and stock consultation rooms .
    • Sterilize and set up instruments for ophthalmic surgical procedures; assist with minor office surgery, laser treatments.
    • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
    • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS/ PREFERENCES
    • Preferred completion of Ophthalmic Technician training and certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT, COA) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) or 2 years in Ophthalmology setting.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS/ PREFERENCES None required above education/training requirement. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE and CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    • Preferred COA/COT/COMT by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
    • Must be able to work under time pressures in a busy clinic/office environment.
    • Must be present on site for 8 hour shifts during standard business hours.
    • Must participate in group activities requiring interpersonal skills & cooperation.
    • Must be able to react quickly and immediately respond to emergencies.
    • Must travel between locations as needed
    • Must be able to handle multiple assignments, conflicting demands & priorities.
    • Must maintain attention to detail over extended period of time.
    • Must be continually aware of variations in changing situations.
    • Must be able to move throughout office environment throughout day.
