Ophthalmic Technician provides technical services to assigned ophthalmic patients and assists ophthalmologists or optometrists in the examination and treatment of eye disorders. Takes patient history, conducts visual acuity screenings, and performs various technical procedures, including refractometry, tonometry, lensometry, and keratometry. Being an Ophthalmic Technician prepares patients for exams and procedures. Operates, maintains, and sanitizes ophthalmic equipment and instruments. Additionally, Ophthalmic Technician may assist physicians in performing minor surgical and laser procedures. May dispense contact lenses. Typically requires an associate degree. May require Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA). May require Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT). Typically reports to a manager. Work environment:
1. Daily operation of exam room equipment: hand-held instruments, muscle light, retinoscope, direct and indirect ophthalmoscope, biomicroscope (slit lamp), Goldmann tonometer, phoropter and in office projection screen and/or EDTRS screen.
2. Daily operation of various diagnostic equipment: manual and automated lensometer, auto-refractor, ocular coherence tomography, corneal topography, A-scan and B-scan ultrasonography, corneal pachymetry and non-mydriatic retinal imaging.
3. Required to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
4. Ability to assist patients, as necessary, into exam chairs for diagnostic testing and treatment
5. Ability to maintain confidentiality in the performance of duties
6. Ability to complete work in a timely, accurate and thorough manner
7. Ability to work collaboratively with members of the EMG team and support a positive EMG Culture
