RESEARCH OPERATIONS MANAGER-BIOCONTAINMENT FAC

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks a RESEARCH OPERATIONS MANAGER-BIOCONTAINMENT FAC to be responsible for oversight of operations of the Southeastern Biosafety Laboratory Alabama Birmingham (SEBLAB) dedicated to support research requiring Biosafety Level-3/Animal Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3/ABSL-3 or A/BSL-3) containment. Coordinate daily activities regarding all aspects of facility operation, maintenance, personnel, biosafety, and biosecurity.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Work with the Facility Operations Specialist to ensure safe operation of the building
• Work with Biosafety to ensure CDC and other research practices' biosafety regulations are continuously met
• Facility operations specialist to work with biosafety to ensure facility regulations are met
• Work with Animal Resources Program (ARP) to ensure animal welfare and IACUC regulations are continuously met
• Work with the SEBLAB Director and the Facility Operations Specialist to lead the weekly SEBLAB research and facilities operations meeting
• Work with the SEBLAB Director to establish and oversee a new team of research scientists within SEBLAB (SEBLAB Core Research Team); likely two R5 scientists
• Work with the SEBLAB core research team to ensure safe and effective operation of cutting-edge scientific equipment and other core lab support for PI experiments
• Work with the SEBLAB Director and Core research team to establish and manage six new scientific cores within SEBLAB including Cell culture core, Microbiology core, In vivo core, In vitro core, Single cell core, Pandemic Preparedness core
• Work with UAB Core lab leaders to coordinate appropriate training and support efforts for the SEBLAB Core research team
• Work with the SEBLAB Director and ARP administrative staff to establish and invoice for core services rendered; equipment logs; and monthly invoices to non-BSL-3 end users
• Work directly with SEBLAB PIs and their staff to help optimize protocols, IACUCs, IRBs, and execute experiments within SEBLAB; work with SEBLAB Director
• Work with the SEBLAB Director to establish and drive SEBLAB's independent sponsored research program evaluating medical countermeasures to BSL-3 and other emerging pathogens (vaccines, drugs, serology, diagnostics)
• Coordinate equipment preventative maintenance and service with outside contractors (Herr)
• Work with vendors to implement new equipment, coordinate training efforts for the core research team and PI end users
• Work with SEBLAB Director to generate ideas and continuously optimize SEBLAB operations/efficiency
• Perform other duties as assigned

Salary Range: $77,640-$126,170

Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience OR Master's degree and four (4) years of related experience OR Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirements
