JOB SUMMARY
This Operations-based position provides coverage during periods of absenteeism of school-based staff and / or support during emergency situations.
Work involves responsibility for maintaining proper sanitary and operating standards for each school facility or satellite office.
Work is repetitive and is performed according to schedules and instructions. This position is considered essential personnel for emergency situations, including inclement weather conditions.
Management reserves the right to limit the use of annual leave during mission essential timeframes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operates the heating, air conditioning, and ventilation equipment within the school in a safe and efficient manner and to provide a comfortable interior climate within established guidelines.
- Inspects facilities and grounds to assure the maintenance of safety, sanitary, and security standards are met daily.
- Opens, closes, and locks buildings and gates, or assigns tasks to responsible subordinate.
- Participates in general cleaning of building including high dusting, cleaning light fixtures and air vents, and replacing lamps, fluorescent tubes, and ceiling tiles.
- Makes minor maintenance repairs and / or adjustments, such as cleaning clogged plumbing fixtures and replacing electric bulbs, fuses, and ballasts.
- Performs preventive maintenance on all equipment as assigned.
- Oversees and participates in the snow removal program.
- Maintains records of area inspections, inventory, and equipment maintenance.
- Assists in developing custodian work schedules and floor plans as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
- Technical or Vocational School Beyond High School education in a skilled industrial or construction trade preferred.
Experience
- Three (3) years professional cleaning, building equipment service or operator experience required.
- supervisory and / or heating and cooling equipment experience preferred.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the applicant to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Bi-lingual (English / Spanish) skills desired.
- Ability to train on the following, i.e. Right to Know Law, Asbestos Awareness, Blood Borne Pathogens, general cleaning, equipment, and chemicals.
- Ability to operate and maintain custodial and grounds equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
- Ability to safely use and operate genie lift; training provided if necessary.
- Ability to employ business technology tools (e.g. E-mail, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrollment tool, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).
- Ability to work shift work, scheduled extended hours and / or respond to emergencies outside of normal working hours and holidays.
- Provides basic hand tools.
- Satisfactory score on any test required.
Language Requirements
Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
- In lieu of completing the course above and / or passing the course test, 4th Grade Stationary Engineer License issued by Maryland Board of Stationary Engineers required.
- Successful completion of Leadership Training or Certificate Course issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required; or
- First available after appointment Leadership Training or Certificate Course issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required.
- Successful completion of Introduction to School Facilities Boiler Plant Safety & Procedures Certificate issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course
- Consideration will be given to candidates who can achieve a passing grade on Introduction to School Facilities Boiler Plant Safety & Procedures Certificate issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course
- Hold or be eligible for Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA / DMV) required.
- Proof of a good driving record required.
- Daily access to reliable transportation.

- Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position.
