Position Summary
The director of the Edwards Cancer Institute (ECI) and chair of Oncology is responsible for the
development of a nationally-recognized academic cancer center institute. As the physician champion, the director will develop and oversee multidisciplinary teams for treatment of cancers,
organize research initiatives, seek and acquire grants, and encourage publications and presentations in prestigious venues nationally.
The Opportunity
The Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine seeks a director and chair of Oncology to bring transformative cancer care to southern West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. Based in Huntington, West Virginia, the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine partners with its clinical enterprise, Marshall Health, and its primary hospital partners at Marshall Health Network (MHN) to fulfill a longstanding commitment to comprehensive cancer care. Together, we envision a world-class health system that serves as a the hub for outstanding cancer care and treatment for our region, integration of all cancer services across the academic health system,expansion of cancer research and enhanced training opportunities.
Core Responsibilities
The ECI director’s major responsibilities include the following:
- Coordinate cancer care, from prevention and detection to advanced therapies, a cross the
health system, including ECI, St. Mary’s Cancer Center, Rivers Health and throughout Marshall
Health and its hospital partners to ensure the highest standards of care, are met particularly in
regard to quality, safety, and innovation.
- Chair the Department of Oncology at the School of Medicine.
- Build the ECI into a nationally-recognized academic and research institute.
- Move the ECI toward achieving designation as a National Cancer Institute.
- Attract investigators, academicians, and clinicians of the highest caliber to the ECI.
- Assure the ECI and the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine delivers innovative treatment
therapies in cancer.
- Develop the portfolio of clinical care and collaborative research.
- Maintain an active clinical practice.
- Identify appropriate resources, space and recruitment packages for those who will support the
cancer center research enterprise.
The ECI director is responsible for initiating faculty recruitment and has authority over cancer
center research, clinical, educational, and administrative activities. Specifically, the director
manages the following:
- Allocation and management of ECI space and equipment.
- Development and management of the center’s operating budget in coordination with the
president and CEO of Marshall Health Network, dean of the School of Medicine, and vice
president of ECI.
- Review and approval of appointments of all cancer center membership applications.
- Recruitment of faculty who are essential to the mission of the cancer center.
- Establishment and management of the center’s research programs and shared resources.
- Review of all extramural funding applications that involve ECI space or resources.
- Management of clinical care programs located within the ECI and at outreach sites.
- Authority to raise unrestricted funds through the ECI Foundation Fund and to manage those
funds in conjunction with the foundation’s executive director and the Edwards Foundation
Board of Directors.
- Oversight of development funds specifically allocated for cancer research.
