    Our Livonia, Michigan office is currently looking for an Occupational Health & Safety Director. The essential function of this role will be responsible for developing and overseeing health and safety programs at all Mastronardi Facilities. This position partners closely with management and the Health and Safety professionals assigned to the DC’s and Farms, to implement and/or update safety related policies and procedures. This position promotes safety through education, training and fostering a safety culture throughout the organization. The Occupational Health & Safety Director will monitor state and federal regulations and adjust existing programs as needed to ensure compliance. This role is the subject matter expert in Occupational Health and Safety for the organization and is responsible for the development, deployment and maintenance of a OH&S program built on a continuous improvement model.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Oversee the development and standardization of health and safety plans for U.S. locations and lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce work process risks, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices
    • Provide recommendations to senior leadership on how they can further drive a Safety Culture and reduce risk.
    • Measure and evaluate effectiveness of safety programs across all parts of the business, using established goals and metrics, work with the Benefits team and Insurer to control costs
    • Analyze injury data to develop strategies for reducing risk exposure and accident and injury occurrences; work with the Benefits team and Insurer to control costs
    • Work with the Health and Safety teams at the facilities to complete thorough and timely accident/incident investigations, safety inspections, and safety management systems audits and assist Human Resources in reporting Worker’s Compensation claims
    • As the subject matter expert on occupational safety, stay up to date on safety regulations and best practices in US, Canada and Mexico.
    • Develop and implement emergency response plans, work with the teams in the facilities to plan drills and exercises to verify readiness.
    • Maintain updated evacuation plans, and conduct safety training as required by regulatory compliance and company guidelines
    • Work with training and development team to create and facilitate health and safety courses
    • Promote health and safety awareness through internal company communication; newsletters, training programs, activities
    • Ensure the compliance to maintaining the OSHA 300 & 301 logs at each of our sites and ensure injuries/illnesses are accurately logged in a timely manner
    • Analyze ADA reasonable accommodations requests that are escalated from the facilities. Oversee responses to OSHA and other regulatory agencies regarding Health and Safety issues.
    • Organize and conduct evaluations of our sites to ensure Mastronardi and Regulatory practices are being followed.
    • Continuously research, identify and evaluate best practices, and establish new resources, tools and methodologies to maximize effectiveness of the Safety program.
    • Develop and oversee the implementation of proper PPE and programs to reduce exposure to injury or exposure. This would include use of gloves, protective footwear, eye protection, hearing protection, respirators or other face masks.
    • Develop and maintain an approval process for chemicals to ensure compliance to safety standards.
    • Develop and maintain infectious and communicable control plans for our facilities. This would include processes to control and limit the spread of seasonal flu and other illnesses.
    • Must maintain confidentiality of all proprietary information, as well as other Company data, including personnel information
    • As a leader in the safety team, you will be required to be contacted and available after hours to address emergencies and technical issue for a 24 x 7 distribution and farm operation.


    Education/Background Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene or similar degree required. Masters degree is preferred.
    • At least seven to ten years’ experience in safety related roles.
    • Experience working and implementing Safety and Health initiatives in an agricultural growing environment is preferred.
    • Must have experience developing and monitoring chemical/pesticide use programs.
    • Ability to speak Spanish is preferred.
    • A minimum 5 to 7 years supervisory experience
    • Must have experience working with OSHA and or the Department of Labor.

    • Technical skills, including computer proficiency and data management
    • Ability to document preventative and immediate corrective actions
    • Valid passport and driver’s license must be maintained
    • Willingness to work with a high degree of professionalism and personal integrity.
    • Strong knowledge of local, state and federal laws and requirements to maintain compliance to all relevant statues and guiding principles.


    Working Conditions:

    • Combination of office, farm, and refrigerated warehouse environment
    • Must be capable of lifting up to 30 lbs
    • Position requires sitting, standing, walking and bending on a regular basis
    • Some travel will be required (40%-50% across multiple US Farms/DC's)
    • Time spent in an expansive refrigerated warehouse, where the temperature averages 50°F. The background noise approaches 70 dcbs.
