Nutrition Director directs and oversees all aspects of an organization's or institution's nutrition guidelines and initiatives. Oversees institution of basic nutrition plans including individualized menu plans and monitors intake and acceptance of meals, snacks, and supplements. Being a Nutrition Director monitors and ensures proper nutrition education is provided. May oversee menu planning or food service operations. Additionally, Nutrition Director requires a bachelor's degree. Requires Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) from Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Typically reports to top management. The Nutrition Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Nutrition Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. DIRECTOR - CHILD NUTRITION

  • Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, or designee, plan, organize, direct and administer a fiscally sound food service program in compliance with federal, state, county and district requirements.
     
    Direction and general supervision is exercised over all Nutrition Services personnel including clerical support.
    1. Manages, plans, coordinates, and directs the operations of the central food service office and all District cafeterias in conformance with federal, state, county and district requirements;
    2. Responsible for the efficient and economical operation of the food service department;
    3. Implement and supervise preparation of cost control records; analyze financial and operating statements;
    4. Plan master menu for the District, assuring dietary balance and nutritional adequacy, and in conformance with state and federal regulations;
    5. Periodic inspection of site cafeterias for cleanliness and conformance to established district operating procedures;
    6. Plans, develops, supervises and participates in a training program for all food service personnel;
    7. Supervise and participate in the selection, assignment, retention and evaluation of food service personnel;
    8. Preparation of department budget for food service operations; control expenditures;
    9. Control of the procurement and distribution of foods, supplies and equipment;
    10. Control of food service stock in the warehouse;
    11. Make recommendations for policies and procedures for the food services department;
    12. Provide timely and effective communication to District site administrators regarding issues/situations that may impact the District, its divisions or its schools;
    13. Receive and answer requests for information on District policy and procedures as it relates to food services;
    14. Attend food service conferences and conventions as the District's representative;
    15. Coordinate accounting procedures for proper record control and management of money, labor, food, and supplies.
    16. Other related duties as assigned.

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, or related field.  Status as a Registered Dietitian and/or graduate coursework in Business, Public Administration is desired.
     
    EXPERIENCE:
    • Five years of full-time administrative experience in institutional or commercial food service, including experience in volume food production, planning, preparation and service, food ordering, financial control, staff training, reporting, and sanitation. Experience in a public school district is desirable.
    • Two years in a supervisory capacity.
    LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
    • Possession of a valid California Driver's License and automobile insurance
    • Ability to be covered under the District property/liability insurance.
    • Use of a private automobile is required.

    CONTINUING EDUCATION/TRAINING:
    In accordance with the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA), incumbents must complete at least 12 hours of annual and continuing education/training related to the following topics:  
    • Administrative practices, including training in application, certification, verification, meal counting and meal claiming procedures.
    • Supplemental training topics required by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service to address program integrity or other critical issues.
    In addition, incumbents must complete (8) hours of food safety training within 30 days of their start date or not more than five (5) years prior to their start date (verification of compliance may be requested). Application Filing

    Foreign degrees and credit units require translation and equivalency established by an agency recognized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

    Examination
    Following the evaluation of training and experience, and responses to supplemental questions, the most qualified applicants selected to move forward will be invited to participate in the structured oral examination.  Make-up exams will not be offered. 

    After the exam procedure concludes for this recruitment, an eligibility list will be established to fill future vacancies. When eligibility lists include open and promotional lists of qualified persons through competitive examination, the promotional list will be used first, unless otherwise stated on this bulletin.
     
    Work Schedule
    This is an exempt position with a full-time schedule, 8 hours/day, 12-month work calendar.
    Note: Occasionally, the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours. 

    Salary
    Salary placement for new employees is typically at the first step ($137,552.00/annually) of the six (6) step salary schedule. Upon successful completion of the initial probationary period, a one-step salary advance shall be granted with all future annual advances occurring on the established anniversary date. 

    Probationary Period
    Persons in this position are required to successfully satisfy a probationary period of one (1) year from the date of appointment.  During this period, an employee must demonstrate an overall satisfactory level of performance.

    Leaves
    One (1) day of paid sick leave of absence is earned for each full month of service. The amount of sick leave granted may be accumulated from year to year. Vacation is earned at the rate of two (2) days for each month in paid status for a maximum of twenty-four (24) days per year. There are seventeen (17) paid holidays that fall within the work year.

    Work Environment
    Work is primarily performed indoors in an office environment with climate-controlled temperatures. Temporary exposure to inclement weather conditions when moving between buildings and sites, and varying temperatures in kitchens (i.e. walk-in refrigerators, ovens, etc.).  Exposure to cooking odors, cafeteria noise, and cleaning and sanitizing agents when visiting sites.

    Physical Demands:
    Ability to sit for extended periods of time; frequent walking, some standing; lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, twisting at waist, bending, stooping, squatting, and reaching; vision sufficient to read computer screen and printed documents; hearing and speaking to exchange information; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate computer and standard office equipment.
