The Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) seeks a transformative leader to join the OSPI team as the Director of Training and Special Projects, within the Child Nutrition Services division. This position provides strategic leadership and management to the CNS training and special projects team while working in close collaboration with parallel leadership positions within CNS. This full-time permanent position is based in Olympia, Washington. This position may be eligible for partial telework. Telework is a combination of in-building and off-site days. Position Overview

This position resides within the Child Nutrition Services (CNS) division at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and reports to the Chief Nutrition Officer. This leadership role plans and coordinates the delivery of specialized training and resource development to ensure state and federal Child Nutrition (CN) regulations and policies are met by program operators. This position is also responsible for CN special projects which include the administration and oversight of federal grants available to state agencies. Successful impact will result in making progress on strategic goals for the agency including a committed, unified and customer focused OSPI that supports school districts and other Child Nutrition Program Sponsors to provide equitable access to program participants. 

Key Responsibilities

This position supervises a team of six, is responsible for decision-making and cross division collaboration to ensures CNS training and resources are consistent with applicable state and federal law, and division goals and priorities. 

• Responsible for and administers the organization, planning and delivery of training and resource development for sponsors of USDA Child Nutrition Programs to ensure state and federal regulations and policies are met. 
• Supervise, train, coordinate, and evaluate the work of training team staff to ensure the CNS mission is met.
• Administers USDA Team Nutrition Grants, including applying for, coordinating with other state agencies and partner agencies, program development, contract management and hiring and supervision of grant staff.
• Compile and complete required reports, and other USDA required documents.
• Coordinate with all CNS programs and processes.
• Accountable for knowing and understanding USDA program regulations, policies and procedures.  Responsibility of taking that information and providing it in a clear and understandable manner to program staff and sponsors. Monitors performance of program staff
• Administers and provides accountability for awarded USDA Team Nutrition Grants. Responsible for understanding and applying all applicable grant requirements and reporting.
• Actively participates in the CNS Leadership Team for strategic division planning, and cross division collaboration and coordination.
• This position will have occasional travel required within the State, as well as limited out-of-state attendance at workshops/trainings.

Required Qualifications: 

• Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, Public Health, Institution Management or Business

• Minimum 4 years' work experience in nutrition programs or public health with 1 or more years as supervisor or team lead 

• Experience with federal regulations, procedures and policies of the US Department of Agriculture Child Nutrition Programs

A combination of education and related professional work experience may be considered year for year.

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

• A Master’s degree in a related field
• Registered Dietitian
• Knowledge of and experience with federal regulations, procedures and policies of the US Department of Agriculture Child Nutrition Programs
• Strong commitment to child nutrition programs and the principles of trust, teamwork, collaboration and customer service.
• Experience of successful oversight and accountability for accurate and high-quality project completion within expected timeless.
• Demonstrated competency in the areas of leadership, individual and group interpersonal skills, and sound management practices.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, including the ability to conduct both formal and informal presentations to both large and small groups.
• Ability to manage resources effectively, lead with integrity and seeks to support results.

Desired Qualifications: 

• A Master’s degree in a related field
• Registered Dietitian

Compensation
The annual compensation for the position is $97,760 - $114,400 per year and depends upon experience, educational background and qualifications. Geographic differentials may be applied based on work location of successful candidate. Washington State offers a generous benefit package including health, dental and life insurance, retirement and an optional deferred compensation program.
