Nutrition Director directs and oversees all aspects of an organization's or institution's nutrition guidelines and initiatives. Oversees institution of basic nutrition plans including individualized menu plans and monitors intake and acceptance of meals, snacks, and supplements. Being a Nutrition Director monitors and ensures proper nutrition education is provided. May oversee menu planning or food service operations. Additionally, Nutrition Director requires a bachelor's degree. Requires Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) from Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Typically reports to top management. The Nutrition Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Nutrition Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     Director of School Nutrition Program

    The school nutrition program at Glenwood touches several programs including Allan Cott School and residential services for children. Glenwood has an opportunity for you to become a part of our excellent food services staff as a Director of School Nutrition Program. This leadership role will provide overall management to the department, including administrating, planning, assessing, implementing, and evaluating the food services program. The Director will provide an environment that supports healthy food habits, while maintaining program integrity and client satisfaction, operating within agency guidelines and in compliance with USDA Food and Nutrition Service. Work Hours are M-F, 8 am-4 pm with flexibility.


    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Supervises food service operations and ensures all requirements are met (e.g., staffing, menu planning, purchasing, food production, record keeping, State and Federal reporting).
    • Oversees the preparation of 315 meals per day, which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
    • Publishes menus, makes available a variety of food choices and manages food preparation activities.
    • Maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and safety in the kitchen.
    • Approves invoices for payment and prepares revenue/expense projections and maintains accurate inventory records.
    • Participates in food service staff selection and orientation processes, ensures the equitable distribution of workloads, arranges for substitutes during staff absences as needed and assist in the hiring, transfer, promotion, demotion, or dismissal of food service workers.
    • Trains food service staff in procedures to effectively accomplish assigned duties, shares knowledge about new laws and advances in operational procedures/equipment technology.
    • Ensures all food service staff receive the required annual training hours per CNP standards.
    • Ensures that meals meet USDA nutrition guidelines.
    • Uses standardized recipes to maintain quality control and monitors production sheets/work progress.
    • Ensures compliance with district specifications and mandated regulations (e.g., hazard analysis of critical control points, portion size, sanitation procedures, etc.).
    • Monitors temperature controls, addresses the needs of individuals with health conditions that necessitate dietary modifications.
    • Helps staff as needed to meet established schedules.
    • Provides staff leadership, creates staff enthusiasm and teamwork to promote a safe, efficient, and effective work environment.
    • Develops job performance standards that provide for performance improvement.
    • Complete all assigned administrative tasks.
    • Must complete ALSDE approved safety training every five years; Civil Rights training must be completed annually; procurement training must be completed annually.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
    • Strong administrative/technical skills; Comfort working on a PC using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, IM/video conferencing (Teams & Zoom), and telephones efficiently.
    • Physical requirements include standing, bending, and walking for 6-8 hours per day.
    • Lifting and carrying weights up to 20 pounds.

    Qualifications


    • Minimum Education: Associate degree from an accredited institution.
    • Three years’ supervisory experience.
    • One-year relevant food service experience.
    • Must be cleared through the Dept. of Human Resources Child Abuse & Neglect Registry as well as the ABI/FBI and pass all required pre-employment and background screenings.
    • At least 8 hours of food safety training is required either not more than 5 years prior to start date or completed within 30 calendar days of start date.
    • Must annually complete the required training hours for food service directors as outlined by the Alabama Department of Education – Child Nutrition Program and attend provided trainings.


    Required Licenses/ Certification

    ServSafe Certification- National Restaurant Association preferred or obtained within the first 90 days of employment and must be maintained.
