POSITION SUMMARY: Provides assistance to the nursing staff by performing clerical and record keeping functions in a hospital with patients ranging in age from 18 years to geriatric.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience desirable but not required. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must maintain current CPR certification throughout employment.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and write legibly in English. Ability to effectively present information and respond to supervisor, manager and/or other staff members.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Performs clerical duties to include, but not limited to, scheduling diagnostic tests and
interdepartmental or external agency consults, utilizing hospital systems to order
supplies, admit, maintain and discharge patients, and transcribing physician orders
accurately. Retrieves and evaluates status of diagnostic test/procedure reports; initiates
and maintains departmental and patient medical records. 25%
Perform receptionist duties including answering and responding to call lights and phone
calls in a timely and professional manner; utilizing hospital and department paging
systems appropriately. 25%
Assists in maintaining a clean, safe and orderly environment to include, but not limited
to, stocking office/desk or other unit supplies, reporting and follow-up of maintenance
issues, establishing/ maintaining orderly physical status of nurse’s station and organized
systems for the efficient work flow of the unit. 10%
Monitors and replaces stationary in the patient’s medical record, including thinning of
charts and posting of labs/other test results in a timely manner, to assure the medical
record is kept up to date and documentation forms are available for use of clinical staff as
needed. 10%
Demonstrates strong people skills and ability to function effectively under stressful

Communicates with other departments as well as Nursing in coordinating various unit
and patient activities. Maintains patient confidentiality. 10%

§ Maintain orderly and properly identified medical record.
§ Complete dietary requests. Check diet orders for accuracy. Validate at tray arrival.

§ Demonstrate satisfactory level of interpersonal skills to interact with physicians and staff, Administration, patients, families, customers, vendors, and governmental and regulatory agencies.
§ Distribute invoices to appropriate departments.
§ Maintain appropriate inventory of clinical/medical record forms needed at nursing station.
§ Receive and distribute patient mail.
§ Report suspected violation of security or confidentiality issues.
§ Schedule patient transport as needed.
