TITLE: Unit Secretary
JOB OVERVIEW: A unit secretary is responsible for the clerical and receptionist duties on a patient care unit. A float pool unit secretary is responsible for supporting clerical and receptionist duties throughout the house.

RESPONSIBLE TO: PCS Manager, Administrative Supervisor,
and/or Charge Nurse
PREREQUISITES:
1. Evidence of good communication skills, both oral and written, including ability to spell accurately and write legibly.
2. Evidence of typing/basic computer education.
3. One year acute hospital experience required.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Capable of comprehending, executing, and acting within scope of practice.
Able to communicate effectively in oral and written form in the English language.
Demonstrate excellence in communication skills and customer service.
Dress professionally and follow VMC uniform standards.
Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills in a diverse population.
Able to communicate and work effectively with the physical and emotional developments of all age groups.

Ensures obsolete forms are removed from unit.
Organizes and maintains efficient work area.
Completes department and unit forms according to established guidelines.
Updates phone rosters as necessary.
Maintains chart order.
COMMUNICATION
Demonstrates effective telephone etiquette.
Demonstrates effective communication with the Medical Staff and other disciplines.
Communicates knowledge of patient preferences to direct care providers.
Requests services from ancillary and support departments.
Greets and assists visitors as they arrive to department.
Communicates when lab is calling with critical lab results to the responsible RN.
SAFETY
Recognizes and responds appropriately to all emergency codes.
Answers intercom and triages calls so that patient needs can be met in a timely fashion.
Maintains competency to work on all patient care units.
Adheres to infection control standards.
Participates in emergency and disaster plans/drills.
Demonstrates ability to use patient care technology (MobileView, Emergin, Right Fax).
