    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    Under the supervision of the Administrator, has authority, responsibility, and accountability for the functions, activities, and training of the nursing services staff, in addition to the supervision of the Therapy Department and its’ functions within the facility. In the absence of the Administrator, assumes responsibility for the facility. Is responsible for the overall management of resident care 24 hours a day, seven (7) days per week.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Responsible for those employees as indicated in the organizational chart
    • Reports to the Director of Nursing to convey resident status and other conditions related to the nursing department
    • Works as needed, schedule to be flexible, is approved by the Director of Nursing and the Administrator
    • Assumes all responsibilities of the Director of Nursing in their absence. Familiarity of these functions is achieved through close association and constant communications regarding such responsibilities on a day-to-day basis with the Director of Nursing
    • Reviews the 24-hour report. Obtains a report of resident's condition from rounds on the nursing units, and reports pertinent information to the DON
    • Reviews all laboratory reports, making notation of all abnormal results and assuring that attending physician is to be notified
    • Initiates and compiles infection surveillance forms, as indicated by abnormal culture and sensitivity reports, to ensure treatment and resolution of said infection
    • Reviews all resident incident reports, giving recommendations for prevention for other actions deemed necessary. All resident incident reports are on file in the ADON's office
    • Directs and supervises the implementation of resident care policies. Monitors changes in residents condition and addresses any other circumstances that warrant attention
    • Attends residents comprehensive care plan meeting as requested
    • Attends as an active member of QAPI committee
    • Has been fit tested and is aware of how to locate a maintenance free respirator
    • Attends meetings as invited or required, Ie: morning report, ski, A&I, Infection control, etc.
    • Plans, organizes, implements, evaluates, coordinates, and directs an effective infection control program in accordance with all rules and regulations
    • Ensures all infections control precautions and aseptic techniques are practiced appropriately and corrects problem areas effectively
    • Performs all special investigations of nosocomial acquired infections. Traces possible sources of infection in facility. Institutes appropriate actions to confine infections
    • Provides leadership and commitment to improving the use of safe and appropriate antibiotic use in the facility
    • Assures the quality assessment and assurance committee reviews the antibiotic use and resistance data
    • Assures the utilization of acceptable surveillance definitions and guidelines for infection monitoring and identifies situations where antibiotics should not be used
    • Assures adherence to tracking and monitoring antibiotic prescribing
    • Provides educational resources and materials to clinical providers, nursing staff, residents, and families to educate about antibiotic resistance and opportunities for improving antibiotic use
    • Maintains a written record of all nosocomial infections
    • Assists in developing and implementing guidelines for decontamination and sterilization in facility
    • Prepares monthly summaries of resident, employee infections, corrective actions taken, and results of corrective action. Reports all reportable diseases and rates of infections over threshold to NYSDOH as per policy
    • Assists all department if evaluating and classifying routine and job related functions to ensure tasks involving blood/bodily fluids are properly identified
    • Make rounds to nursing units for purpose of case findings, reviews sanitation procedures and supervises isolation/precaution practices
    • Prepares any other necessary duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing and the Administrator

    Qualifications:

    • New York State Registered Professional Nurse licensure
    • Long-term Care experience required
    • Able to interpret patient information and make critical decisions about necessary actions
    • Ability to supervise and work well with and show respect toward other healthcare personnel (i.e., CNAs, LPNs, physicians, etc.), residents, and their family members
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to follow written and oral instructions
    • Able to perform tasks while upholding high standards of quality, cleanliness, and kindness
    • Physical endurance for frequent activity; ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds
