Nursing Director administers the nursing program in a hospital, nursing home, or other medical facility to maintain standards of patient care. The Director of Nursing is responsible for all nursing staff, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nursing assistants, and the non-licensed personnel who provide direct patient care on 24-hour basis seven days a week. The DON must answer for the activities of all her/his staff, as well as bear the responsibility of safety in the workplace. Any problems in patient care such as lack of inadequate staffing ultimately fall on his/her shoulders, and they must make sure those under them are doing their jobs properly and have adequate training and continuing education provided by the Quality Assurance Nurse and/or other training. The person holding this position is delegated the responsibility for carrying out the assigned duties and responsibilities in accordance with current existing federal and state regulations and established nursing home policies and procedures
