Nurse Practitioner - Surgical works in collaboration with hospital physicians to manage care for patients in a surgical setting. Provides direct care and follow-up for patients in surgical care units. Being a Nurse Practitioner - Surgical orders, interprets, and records results of clinical tests and reports results to physicians. Prescribes medications and makes recommendations for other therapeutic forms of treatment. Additionally, Nurse Practitioner - Surgical requires a master's degree. Requires Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP). Requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
o Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
o Assists physicians with examinations, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care.
o Administers and controls narcotics and medications.
o Administers blood products, IV medications and TPN.
o Provides health care instruction/education to patient and family members.
o Maintains patient records and charts to ensure an accurate record of the patient’s medical treatment.
o Maintains patient documentation.
o Participates in the planning and implementation of the patient’s care.
o Coordinates post-operative discharge. Ensures that patient is ready for discharge.
o Explains medications in criteria. Ensures that patients understand post-operative instructions.
o Checks identification of patient, including surgical permit, lab work, x-ray reports, and allergies. Reports any change in physical status of patient.
o Completes all documentation per Policies and Procedures.
o Responds quickly in any circumstance.
o Cares for patients professionally and courteously.
o Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by complying with all applicable safety regulations.
o Identifies opportunities to standardize processes and error proof systems that will lead to increased safety and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
o Participates in Quality Improvement programs on a regular and continuing basis.
o Participates in compliance programs such as HIPAA, safety training etc.
o Supervises nursing care given to patients.
o Performs other duties as assigned.
