Nurse Practitioner - Oncology works in collaboration with physicians and other members of the healthcare team to manage care for patients in an oncology setting. Provides quality care in all settings for cancer patients, families and staff. Prescribes medications and makes recommendations for other therapeutic forms of treatment. Additionally, Nurse Practitioner - Oncology assesses patient condition and may provide treatment using specialized medical equipment. Requires a master's degree.     The nurse practitioner will assist with all aspects of patient care, including diagnosis, treatments, and consultations. The NP will primarily support in the office setting but may at times support the physicians with hospital rounds.

    SERVING THE PATIENT
    :

    Nurse Practitioners serve the patient by providing direct patient care, collaboration between the patient and their physician, patient education, and supporting the RNs, CSS and other team members with patient guidance and instructions.


    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
    :

    • Provide continuity of care between physicians and patients

    • Assist with or independently perform in-office procedural visits

    • Provide follow up visits for hematology/oncology patients, assess and treat acute patients to assist with symptom management, new chemotherapy treatment education, breast health, high risk and survivorship clinic visits.

    • Approve chemotherapy orders in the provider absence, order and review labs, order and review diagnostic testing (CT, MRI, PET scan results).

    • Conduct hospital rounds on follow up patients, when appropriate.

    • Assist infusion suite RNs with managing reactions during an infusion in collaboration with the physician.


    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
    :

    • Master of Science of Nursing Required

    • APRN License,

    • Strong technical and patient education/communication skills with demonstrated leadership.

    • Ability to function independently and in collaboration with a physician as part of a team to improve and assess patient care.

    • Will work with healthcare team to provide coordination of care throughout the system providing direct care and patient education planning.
    • Oncology experience preferred.


    WORK ENVIRONMENT:


    Clinic environment. Work requires sitting, standing, and/or walking in and around the clinic. Good manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination, along with the ability to read and comprehend written instructions. High traffic area dealing with patients, family members, other staff, and physicians. Interaction with others may be constant and interruptive. Requires working under stress. Working knowledge of computers, with the ability to type, operates a keyboard, calculate, and operate equipment common to the field. Ability and knowledge to perform professional care appropriate to a chemotherapy nurse. Knowledge of administrative policies, regulations, and procedures to administer patient care. Knowledge of medical equipment and instructions. Skill in applying and modifying the principal methods, and techniques of primary care to provide ongoing patient care. Skilled in understanding medical history, assessing, and interpreting findings, along with the knowledge of common safety hazards and emergency situations. Skill in preparing and maintaining records, reports and responding to correspondence as needed. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with physicians, patients, family members, employees, and the public. Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines. May be required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; lift and/or move patients. Frequent exposure to toxic substances, medical preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
