Position Description:
Position Summary
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a diverse, exciting, and prestigious research facility that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. Over the years, the Observatory has been involved in some of the most important astronomical discoveries of our time. For example, the VLA was used to observe the collision of two neutron stars, an event that helped confirm the existence of gravitational waves. The Observatory has also been instrumental in the study of black holes, galaxies, and the early universe.
At NRAO we are seeking a Network Operations Manager who will direct the technical and strategic aspects of network and communications infrastructure for the Observatories.They will be responsible for the vision, strategy, architecture, standards, policies, planning, coordination, and oversight of the physical, operational IT Communications environment within the NRAO and for reliable delivery and support of the Network Infrastructure delivering Scientific and General Business Services.
The location for this position will be at our offices in either Charlottesville, VA, Albuquerque or Socorro, NM.
What You Will be Doing:
Plans for and maintains internal infrastructure and services supporting voice/data network. Leads team in monitoring and troubleshooting to ensure reliable availability.
Collaborate with systems architects on development, maintenance, and upgrade strategies.
Oversees technical infrastructure and works with facilities to assure appropriate power, security, and environmental conditions for network operations and data centers.
Assures robust and, where possible, high-availability access to long-haul data carriers (domestic, transcontinental, international) in support of scientific data transfer at 100Gbit/Sec speeds, includes contract acquisition, monitoring, and administration.
Maintain risk register.
Works closely with Data Management Department, Computing & Information Services, Cyber Security, and Facilities.
Input to planning for future telescope facilities and projects; contributes to grant proposals, reviews and collaborations for securing external cooperation and funding.
Oversees Systems Engineering, specification, procurement, implementation and maintenance planning of complex inter-connected systems.
Oversees design, setup and provisioning of meeting room support technology.
Advises on the infrastructure and technical standards to promote inter-Observatory communication.
Work Environment
Work is mission driven, team oriented and typically performed in an office setting within a research or development environment. Ability to safely lift 40lbs on a regular basis.
Who You Are:
You have a Bachelors degree in computing or information technology or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
You have at least eight years of experience in managing IT groups.
