Network Engineering Director plans, designs, and develops all aspects of network systems that will meet an organization's requirements for performance, security, and compliance with relevant standards and regulations. Identifies network requirements for hardware, software, and services that will provide optimal solutions and meet the capacity requirement for the organization. Being a Network Engineering Director directs network architecture design, feasibility, and cost studies. Develops monitoring, maintenance, expansion, contingency, and recovery plans and strategies to ensure the network is responsive to changes in demand. Additionally, Network Engineering Director keeps abreast with the latest technologies and best practices and utilizes vendors and providers to provide additional resources to support networks. Usually is certified and has deep knowledge of vendor-specific products. Requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering or equivalent. Typically reports to a director. The Network Engineering Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Network Engineering Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. The Director of Engineering is responsible for coordinating the joint response of Smithville’s principal network design agents - the Plant Engineering and Network Engineering Departments. The Director of Engineering is also responsible for overseeing the Network Operations Department as the operational support agent. A successful candidate is an innovation leader who proposes ideas that feed the Executive Leadership Team's strategic considerations.

As a senior manager, the Director of Engineering will be expected to lead cross-functional teams required for special corporate initiatives on an as-needed basis. The Director will make high-impact decisions on a regular basis. Those decisions may include, changes to operating procedures, technical architecture, department structure, or project execution and will be responsible for capital and operational budgets for provider-side activity.
