Identifies and troubleshoots network issues and follows procedures to resolve problems. Being a Network Control Technician documents network issues and configuration changes as soon as they occur. May perform upgrades, preventative maintenance, or equipment installation. Additionally, Network Control Technician follows standard operating procedures to notify users of outages or changes to network status. May require an associate degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Network Control Technician work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role.   • JOB SUMMARY:

    Under the supervision of the Data Network Supervisor, the Data Network Technician (DNT) administers, maintains, installs, tests, troubleshoots, and monitors all networks and systems used to provide service to the company and its customers.  To ensure quality of service of Range and customer data.  This role actively supports other company departments and their customers with technology needs. Work-related travel is expected in this position as necessary.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS:

     

    Equipment Monitoring and Administration:

    • Coordinate use of and monitor data network equipment, wireless equipment, transport equipment, and switching equipment.
      1. Uses multiple NMS’s (network management software) to monitor and provision customer access equipment.
    • Coordinate tasks, technicians, and material to complete required jobs.
      1. Uses multiple network and alarm monitoring software to identify network troubles. Troubleshooting or dispatching as necessary to resolve all network issues.
    • Support staff, technicians, and customers with troubleshooting network issues, hardware set up and configuring, and software issues. Components may include but are not limited to customer management software, broadband and voice delivery equipment, wireless and residential Wi-Fi
    • Identify upgrades and replacements, growth, and network needs for budgetary planning.
    • Provision, upgrade, and maintain layer 2 switches and some routing.
    • Provision, upgrade, and maintain wireless networks.
    • Monitor and dispatch alarms.
    • Testing customer broadband speeds and supporting of service orders and trouble tickets.

     

    Planning and Installation of Projects

    • Helping other departments with service orders, troubles, and network design.

     

    Maintenance

    • Quality assurance, preventive care, building maintenance, data backup and restoral, testing, repair, alarm handling, battery testing.
    • Traffic and Bandwidth analysis: Identify and troubleshoot customers’ equipment and company equipment.
    • Communicate in simple and comprehendible English the technical limitations, issues, or conditions that the situation demands, so that stakeholders and contacts understand and can process.
    • Participate professionally as part of various teams to accomplish projects and resolve challenges.
    • Perform testing functions to evaluate outcomes, options, and build up knowledge/experience to anticipate future challenges and problems.
    • Maintain equipment using SSH (Secure Shell Protocol)
    • Ability to read   DLR’s (Design Layout Records) of circuits as necessary. 
    • Maintain working knowledge and situational awareness to use appropriate specialized equipment when necessary.
    • Professionally communicates with business and residential customers. Must maintain professionalism when engaging with customers, to skillfully de-escalate and listen effectively to customers.
    • Meeting and maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal regulations across all areas of this role’s functions are an expectation and key objective.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION): (A combination of demonstrable years’ experience and applicable alternative training(s) may be considered in lieu of the following qualifications).

    1. Successful completion of a 2 year /Associate degree program with an Information Technology, Networking, or Telecommunications focused major, or a degree from a similarly related field of study.
    2. A minimum of 3 years of work experience performing complex Data Network related functions.
    3. A valid, state issued, and insurable drivers’ license.

     

    Preferred qualifications include:

    Certifications:

    a)       Calix (GPON, AXOS, E7-2, C7)

    b)       Metaswitch MCT (Class 4 or Class 5)

    c)       Nokia ONC (Optical Network Certification)

    d)       CompTIA Network

    e)       Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)

     

    Degree:

    a)       4 year / Bachelor’s degree with an Information Technology, Networking, or Telecommunications focused major, or a degree from a similarly related field of study.

    • Administrative / General Office Equipment Operation: Efficiently use common office equipment (computer, digital camera, scanner, fax machine, copier, phone). Identify operational problems with common equipment and determine resolution.  Repair and upgrade office and / or technical equipment.
    • Oral Comprehension and Expression: The ability to listen / understand information / ideas presented through spoken words and sentences, paired with the ability to communicate information / ideas in speaking so others will understand.
    • Written Comprehension and Expression: The ability to read / understand information / ideas presented through written / typed words / sentences, paired with the ability to communicate information / ideas in writing so others will understand.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

    This role performs assigned work duties within a general office environment. Employees may be occasionally exposed to changing weather conditions or contaminants. Other functions and demands, include the following:

    1. Sitting / standing at an office desk for up to 8 hours / day, or longer depending on the demands of the job.
    2. This role may perform work function in an outdoor environment and may not be protected from weather conditions during performance of those functions.
    3. Exposure to Hazards: This role can be exposed to a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current(s), performing work on scaffolding, ladders, and in elevated places, or exposure to chemicals in the workplace.
    4. Frequent use of technology, computers, devices, keyboards, etc. (Repetitive hand motion and typing like functions)
    5. Hearing, listening, talking, standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling, squatting, balancing, pushing/pulling, crouching, and climbing stairs are all expectations of this role, although some of these functions may be more seldom performed than others.
    6. Must follow all company safety policies / procedures, and always use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
    7. Must be able to lift 30 pounds at times.
    8. Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.
