    Description

    Position summary: 

    The Milwaukee Public Museum is seeking a full-time Research Curator of Paleontology to oversee the museum’s geology and invertebrate/vertebrate paleontology department. MPM has extensive collections of Lower Paleozoic (Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian) fossils from Wisconsin and adjacent states plus sizable collections from the Great Basin, the eastern United States, and parts of Europe. There are small collections of invertebrate fossils from other time intervals and regions (totaling about 43,000 specimens), an eclectic collection of Pleistocene vertebrate specimens from the Midwest and small collections of Late Cretaceous vertebrates from the Hell Creek Formation of Montana and North Dakota (about 50,000 specimens combined). There are also small collections of about 600 type specimens, more than 23,000 plant fossils, some 35,000 rocks and minerals, and meteorites. Much of the Ordovician, Silurian, and Devonian collections from the upper Midwestern United States have been databased and photographed through extramural awards (~100,000 specimens).

    Position Expectations: 

    • Develop and maintain an active research program reflecting the highest scholarship standards including delivery of peer-reviewed publications in the appropriate journals and/or books regularly.   

    • Seek funding for department-based research and participate in team research within the Museum and in conjunction with other institutions. 

    • Collaborate with local universities and other institutions with regard to student participation in fieldwork and local research. 

    • Establish, implement, and regularly evaluate a collections plan for the department, including identification of priority areas for acquisitions, fieldwork, special projects, etc. in accordance with staff strengths and collections. 

    • Oversee general participation of self and department staff in various public service programs (i.e., lectures, tours, workshops), including identification/information by public on specimens. Ensures highest customer service to public regarding same.  

    • Plan, develop, and monitor operational and capital budgets, including management of departmental restricted funds (including grants), utilizing such funds ethically.  

     

    Required qualifications: 

    • Doctoral degree (Ph. D.) or equivalent in appropriate discipline. 

    • Including an undergraduate degree with a focus on life sciences and Geology. 

     

    Preferred qualifications: 

    • Museum experience strongly desired.  

    • Curatorial and/or post-doctoral experience.
