    Summary

    The Assistant Curator will support the entire Curatorial Team in bringing the history of rock & roll music and its impact on society and culture alive through the development of original, bold, gritty, and real museum exhibitions that utilize world class objects and archival materials.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Assist in curating exhibitions that help people make meaningful and personal connections to the history of rock & roll music through a clear and compelling interpretive story.

    • Identify, research, locate, and collect objects and images for display based on proposed and planned exhibitions.
    • Conceptualize, research, and interpret collection materials and their historical context.
    • Contact and negotiate the loan (or possible donation) of objects from artists or their representatives, collectors, music industry personnel, etc. for use in exhibitions.
    • Research and write interpretive materials (e.g. exhibitions labels, didactic content, catalogues/publications).

    Work closely with the Director of Curatorial Affairs to develop, plan, and implement goals and objectives for the division of Curatorial Affairs.

    • Stay abreast of current, relevant historical scholarship and best practices in museum exhibition interpretation.
    • Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of the existing collections held by the institution.
    • Supervise professional photography of artifacts and exhibits for catalogues and public relations purposes.
    • Follow up on loan and donation offers.
    • Assist with loan and donation paperwork.

    Build and maintain relationships that will enhance our collecting efforts.

    • Cultivate beneficial associations with current and prospective lenders/donors (e.g. artists, music industry personnel, recording executives, artist representatives and family, and collectors), dealers, Rock Hall patrons, the scholarly community, and colleagues from other institutions.
    • Invite artists and other potential lenders/donors to tour the Rock Hall and Library/Archives.
    • Conduct tours of the Rock Hall for special guests, including artists and other potential lenders/donors.

    Support the Vice President of Curatorial Operations with Artist Relations and VIP Visit tasks.
    • General artist and Inductee correspondence and tasks related.
    • Lead VIP Tours for VIP Guests, Artists, and Inductees
    • Assist in logistical tasks related to Artist and VIP visits and appearances at the museum, including but not limited to, securing travel, transport, and hotel accommodations, arranging glam, reserving green room, arranging food, scheduling vault and/or museum tours, etc.

    Work collaboratively with Curatorial Division staff and other departments.

    • Work closely and collaboratively with other curators, exhibit designers and division staff to ensure that exhibits meet all goals, objectives and deadlines.
    • Work with Collections Department and Legal Department to prepare and process all paperwork and documentation necessary for accessioning objects acquired for exhibit in a manner consistent with the Rock Hall’s Collection Policy and Procedures.
    • Coordinate with the Education Department to ensure that exhibitions integrate engaging educational aspects and appropriate level of content. Participate in education programs relevant to exhibition content, as needed.
    • Respond to relevant outside inquiries via e-mail or website. Work with Marketing/Communication teams to keep Rock Hall website accurate and up to date regarding exhibitions and collections information.
    • Work with Communications/Marketing teams to promote and support museum exhibitions, including media interviews and contributing to websites.
    • Work with Development Division to help acquire resources necessary to sustain and enhance exhibitions, as well as support the Rock Hall’s broader cultivation efforts.

    Assist with exhibit cleaning and maintenance.

    Duties include but may not be limited to the above.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

    • One (1) to three (3) years of professional experience in the museum industry with an emphasis on popular music.
    • Extensive knowledge of Rock and Roll and its related forms.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Ability to professionally interact with major artists and public figures.
    • Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
    • Maintains confidentiality in all assignments.
    • Computer literate: Microsoft Products
    • Ability to successfully pass a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum reference check, background investigation, and drug screening.

    Education Level

    • Bachelor’s degree in History, Popular Music, or related field preferred, with additional preference to candidates with an advanced degree.

    Work Schedule

    • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week, any shift as assigned, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Ability to work rotating shifts and on short notice. Ability to be reachable to respond to clients’ needs and requests. Ability to work additional hours as business needs demand.

    Working Conditions

    • Environmental Parameters: Ability to work in a window-less office. Ability to work in an environment with loud house music and/or machinery. Ability to work around atmospheric conditions, such as dust and fumes.

    Benefits and Compensation

    The salary range for this position is $45,000 - $55,000, commensurate with experience and certifications.
    The Rock Hall offers a generous benefits package including 4 plan options for health insurance with all other benefits being company paid including dental, vision, and life insurance. Other benefits include 403b, 10 vacation days, 12 sick days, 3 personal days, 14 paid holidays, 4 paid volunteer days, and company paid parking.
