    Alexandria Museum of Art Curator
    Annual Salary: $37,400 Fulltime with benefits
    40 hours per week flexing with the needs of the Museum to include some nights and weekends.
    The Alexandria Museum of Art (AMoA) is seeking a museum professional to fill the Curator position. The position requires a Master’s degree in Art History or Museum Studies with an undergraduate degree in Art History. Familiarity with Modern and Contemporary Southern and American artists is preferred. The successful applicant will have knowledge of best practices of accredited museums as set forth by the American Association of Museums, be familiar with Past Perfect collections management software, have the ability to network and build relationships with artists, galleries and other museums, and be a team player. Some nights and weekends hours are expected. The duties related to this position include but are not limited to:
    • Curating temporary and permanent exhibitions from the museum collection for exhibition and travel with assistance from the Collection Manager/Preparator
    • Curating temporary exhibitions made up of loans from artists, collectors, and area museums
    • Conceiving and searching out exhibitions to expand public understanding of particular works, artists, movements and cultures
    • Conducting necessary research and scholarly activity in regard to curatorial duties
    • Care, presentation, and interpretation of works of art in the collection with assistance from the Collection Manager/Preparator and Registrar
    • Manage permanent collection in storage with assistance from the Collection Manager
    • Overseeing all incoming and outgoing loans for exhibitions with assistance of the Registrar
    • Coordinating short term temporary exhibitions from community groups (children and student artwork, Rodrigue Competition Exhibit, etc.) with assistance of the Collections Manager/Preparator
    • Managing the annual September Competition entries, juror, and exhibition with assistance of the Collections Manager/Preparator
    • Serving on the collections committee with the director, board members and community members and scheduling quarterly meetings
    • Making recommendations for the acquisition and deaccession of works of art for the collection as AMoA works to focus the scope of the permanent collection
    • Supervising and assisting preparators with hanging artwork & maintaining galleries
    • Supervising and assisting with unpacking/packing artwork for shipping and transportation
    • Coordinating all transportation arrangements for exhibitions including rental trucks and travel with the assistance of the Registrar.
    • Train and supervise interns, part time staff, volunteers, and student workers in exhibition and collections related duties
    • Assisting the Director of Development & Community Relations with grants and sponsorships to support exhibitions and care of the collection
    • Create exhibition budgets and track expenses for exhibitions & related events in coordination with the Executive Director
    • Working with Marketing to ensure correct and timely dissemination of information to the public regarding exhibitions and curatorial programming
    • Planning and leading events related to exhibitions (lectures, film screenings, panel discussions, tours, etc.)
    • Collaborating with the education department to connect interactive exhibit elements and exhibit-related classes
    • Working with the Executive Director to engage the museum’s Collector’s Circle group including travel plans and selections of artwork to add to the collection.
    AMoA received reaccreditation from AAM in 2013 and again in 2023 and has been in the process of shaping the collection. The scope of the collection is 20th century and contemporary artists of Louisiana, the South, America and Europe with a focus on artists who have a connection to Louisiana and the South or are heavily influenced by the region.
    The Museum is operated by Louisiana State University at Alexandria (LSUA) as an auxiliary university/community museum with a Board of Managers comprised of members from the community, the university, and the LSUA Foundation which owns the museum.
    Qualifications
    • Master’s Degree in Art History, Museum Studies with Curatorial focus, or related field
    • Curatorial experience
    • Knowledge of art museum best practices
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
    • Skill in using Microsoft Office and general computer software
    • Organizational & Time Management skills; ability to work in a fast-paced environment
    • Ability to work collaboratively and individually
    • Ability to build a network within the museum field as well as with artists and collectors
    • Ability to sit at a desk for extended periods
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
    • Ability to do physical tasks of exhibition installation
