    Summary Statement
    The museum curator is responsible for the daily operations, project coordination, and public programming at the Treasures of the Sea and Senator John J Williams museums located in Georgetown and Millsboro. Leading the interpretive team at the site, this position will participate in and oversee all aspects of site operations and programming. This position will work to raise awareness of the programs offered that highlight the history of the sites in regional and national topics.

    Nature and Scope
    An incumbent in this class reports to an administrative supervisor and is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the daily operations of the museum and gift shop. Principal contacts are with the education community and visitors to coordinate and schedule tours, meetings, special events and to resolve operational issues.

    Principal Accountabilities
    1. Oversees museum and safeguards the museum collection. This includes maintaining accession listing for insurance and auditing purposes. Responsible for performing regular internal audits to keep in compliance and ensure accessibility for annual audit conducted by external auditors.

    2. Monitors and evaluates museum/historic site operations and maintains liaison with tenants, special interest groups, community and government officials, contractors and others. Reports daily operational activities/problems to museum administrators/curators.

    3. Monitors procedures for handling revenues and generating financial reports.

    4. Recommends and implements new/ revised policies, procedures and activities.

    5. Conducts individual and group tours and presentations of the college museums. Assess visitor level of knowledge and interests prior to and during tours and makes adjustments to tailor subject matter to the audience, which often includes elementary school-aged children.
    6. Performs a variety of support functions such as maintaining surveillance of visitors/buildings/contents for security purposes and prepares records of visitation, sales, donations, and inventory.

    7. Conducts museum related activities such as preparing and conducting presentations, press releases, proposing draft designs for promotional and marketing materials and updates website information regarding the museums. Assists with the development of community based special events and celebrations by networking with community leaders, service organizations, special interest groups, historical societies and actively participating in planning meetings and coordinating functions.

    8. Plans, assigns, reviews and evaluates the work of subordinate personnel; interviews job applicants and recommends hiring; establishes and conducts staff development sessions, e.g., tour content, professional communication techniques, etc. to enhance services provided.

    9. Oversees gift shop operations, including purchasing, receiving, pricing, displays, inventory, etc.

    10. Performs other related duties as required.

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    • Knowledge of managing museum/historic site operations and functions.
    • Knowledge of the exhibit rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge of the exhibit history and artifacts to perform group and individual tour
    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of retail sales and the associate display, marketing and purchasing.
    • Knowledge of basic accounting and financial software, e.g. QuickBooks.
    • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
    • Prior managerial/supervisory skills
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, decision-making, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to present information clearly and concisely.
    • Ability to organize, coordinate and direct groups, tenants, contractors as well as handling simultaneous multiple projects and functions.
    • Ability to control groups and resolve problems.
    • Ability to conduct specific historical research.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and relate to a diverse population in a multicultural environment.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Associate degree in a relevant field and two (2) years or relevant experience; or other equivalent combination of education and experience.
