    Reports to: Mortgage Lending Manager Classification: Exempt

    Job Summary:

    The Mortgage Loan Officer (MLO) is responsible for proactively soliciting new mortgage business and selling West Community Credit Union products to meet loan quality and production goals. Supports West Community Credit Union strategic effort in growing the mortgage business through the origination of long-term real estate mortgage loans and delivering extraordinary service to members and potential members. Conducts initial pre-qualification interviews and prepares complete loan application packages with necessary documentation. Conveys policies for extension of credit in accordance with Credit Union and Secondary Market investor guidelines. Meets Mortgage Loan scheduling and documentation requirements, and production expectations as determined by the Vice President of Consumer and Mortgage Lending. Serves members, prospective members, builders, developers, and Realtors promptly and professionally. Performs duties in compliance with regulatory requirements including, but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act. Assists Mortgage Loan personnel as necessary.

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Assumes responsibility for the effective and professional completion of assigned loan origination functions.
    • The Mortgage Loan Officer (MLO) shall exercise his/her independent, business judgement and discretion in granting loan applications that are in the best financial interest of the applicant and of West Community Credit Union. The MLO is responsible for interviewing the members to collect information, taking applications, and processing preliminary documentation on loan requests.  
    • Educate and advise members on the home buying process and how to best determine the right mortgage loan options; discuss loan alternatives, credit criteria, interest rates, and loan documentation in such a manner as to elicit positive responses from perspective members.  
    • Performs follow-up work as necessary to achieve conditional approval within established time frames.
    • Notifies member of problem ratios or credit ratings and advises member on potential options.
    • Advises members of loan approval or denial. Explains loan denials precisely and clearly to members.
    • Completes lending operations in accordance with established Credit Union policies and legal requirements.  
    • Generate production (sales) by establishing a business development call program to solicit new mortgage loan business from Realtors, Builders, Members, and other business entities that may not be taking advantage of West Community Credit Unions mortgage products. Makes regular outside the office visits to foster a working relationship that increases the production of new mortgage loan applications.
    • Identify and recommend product and service offerings that enhance the Department’s ability to meet member needs, Credit Union goals, or individual production goals.
    • Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective and professional business relations with members, Realtors and building professionals.
    • Exercise his/her best business judgement and discretion to consult with current and potential members about ongoing and future business needs in achieving their financial goals and objectives. The MLO must be a trusted source for financial solutions by delivering extraordinary service and value with members, establishing ongoing financial services relationships, providing continuing service on all loans, encouraging members to continue their relationship with West Community Credit Union and expanding their use of available services to best meet the member’s individual financial goals.
    • Answers questions, requests, and resolves problems.
    • Inform members of Credit Union loan policies and services.
    • Counsel’s members regarding money management and financial matters. Counsel’s members whose loan requests were denied, explaining reasons and alternatives.
    • Maintains and projects the Credit Union's professional reputation.
    • Represent the Credit Union during the established outside business development call program.
    • Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective communication and coordination with Credit Union personnel and with management.
    • Coordinates functions with related departments and Branches and provides support as needed.
    • Assists Mortgage Loan personnel and serves as a backup as needed.
    • Keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant problems.
    • Attends and participates in meetings and committees as required.
    • Completes required records and reports.
    • Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.
    • Professionally cross-sells Credit Union services.
    • Stays informed regarding changes in lending standards, related legal requirements, and trends in local real estate and competitive market.
    • Ensures that work area is clean, secure, and well maintained.
    • Safeguards Credit Union property such as laptops, cell phones and broadband mobile technology devices.

    Performance Measurements:

    • Lending functions are effectively performed in accordance with established Credit Union policies and with legal and regulatory requirements.
    • Good business relations exist with members and business professionals. Programs and services are properly and thoroughly explained, and questions courteously answered or appropriately referred.
    • Loan documentation, files, and related reports are complete, accurate, and timely. Monthly reports are submitted as scheduled.
    • Loan applications and related financial data are closely and effectively analyzed and evaluated.
    • Good working relations exist with Credit Union personnel and with management. Assistance is provided as needed. Management is appropriately informed.
    • Established individual production expectations are met or exceeded.

    Required Skills/Abilities:

    • Strong interviewing skills
    • Excellent communication and public relations abilities.
    • Good analytical and financial skills.   
    • Able to operate related computer applications, calculator, and other basic business equipment.
    • Understanding of the foundation of determining credit worthiness.
    • Knowledge of Credit Union loan policies, products, procedures, processing, and underwriting guidelines.
    • Familiarity with title reports, insurance, and appraisals.

    Education and Experience:

    • Associate degree or Work Experience equivalent.
    • Additional coursework in business or related field preferred. 
    • Outside Sales Business Development is helpful
    • This position requires registration under the National Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) as a Mortgage Loan Officer (MLO).

    • Repetitive Motion: Movements frequently and regularly required using the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
    • Average Visual Abilities: Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products or operate machinery.
    • Physical Strength: Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.
