Maker Table Metal Inc. is a fast growing metal fabrication shop located just north of Nashville, TN. We specialize in architectural metals for the home and hospitality industry. The business started out of my garage in 2017 and quickly turned into a 20 person operation with sales in 27 countries and every state in the nation. We made INC magazine’s fastest 500 companies a few years back and our work has been featured in Architectural Digest twice. All of this success has exposed our weak points which leads me to search for a Assistant Operations Manager to help organize and structure the day to day operations.
Main Responsibilities Include
Profit - Requires a highly analytical thought process when making decisions based on data not feelings. Keep profit in mind with all decisions but don’t let it drive the bus, we are operating a complex system that requires careful consideration of all the inputs. Must be able to evaluate a product or project after completion for profitability.
Quality - Must DESIGN quality into every product, method, practice and station. Quality is the responsibility of management not a QC tech or operator. Use the 5 why method to discover the root of a problem and solve it with systemic thinking (Edward Deming).
Employee Retention - Create a positive environment where people can learn, grow and feel safe to take risks. Be attentive to each employee's needs and accommodate each as necessary/feasible (Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is our guide).
Training - Learn all basic functions of the system so you can effectively train new employees or ensure that they are adequately trained by another team member. Find opportunities to advance current employees through acquisition of new skills and follow up with pay raises when needed.
Maintenance - Looking for a candidate with strong mechanical skills/knowledge that can troubleshoot equipment issues, order correct replacement parts and coordinate repairs with production and maintenance staff. It is not your job to physically fix the equipment but our size does not allow us to keep an industrial maintenance person on staff so these roles are shared between several people at the shop. I currently perform the previously mentioned tasks but it would be nice to hand them off.
Schedule - Create a daily, weekly and quarterly production schedule. The complication here is our two different sales channels have competing deadlines utilizing shared equipment so a holistic view is required to prioritize the correct product at the correct time to keep all inside and outside customers satisfied.
Loss - Manage loss throughout the system. Lost time due to any number of issues (equipment break down, improper material, lack of training, poor planning, etc.) Lost material; evaluate yields and look for ways to optimize raw material usage. Lost revenue; break down individual products to find unprofitable products. Lost employees; work with problem employees to find a way to keep them engaged and cut them loose when all else fails. Lost products in the production system due to poor sorting or poor manufacturing practices leading to rework.
ERP/MRP - We are half way through implementing Odoo ERP/MRP software. The last two modules that need to be built out are Inventory and Project. We have a private consultant and programmer to write custom code and help with the design of the system. The Assistant Operations Manager is responsible for the implementation, training and ongoing conformance of the system. This is the major project for this year. Expect a new project every year to track alongside your main responsibilities.
Considerations
This is not an exhaustive list of requirements for the Assistant Operations Manager position. Our small size requires that everyone share tasks that can seem menial at times; we don’t have the luxury of saying “that’s not my job”. Everyone must pull together and it is up to the Assistant Operations Manager to set the tone in the shop and lead by example not with blind authority. You don’t need years of metal work experience but you better be willing to put some gloves on and help the guys load a truck for a big install or crawl under a machine to see what the real problem is, not just rely on a report or a picture.
This position is judged by results not effort or hours worked. You must have a strong desire to see this place succeed and grow quickly. Bonus structure is available for this position so expect to share in the success of your work.
