    The Microbiologist working at the Agrinos production facility performs the tasks necessary to execute lab-scale and pre-commercial scale experiments for microbial fermentation process optimization and new product development. This is a hands-on laboratory position with responsibilities including using flask, bench, and pilot scale fermenters, experimental laboratory trials, the maintenance and preparation of the microbial groupings that enable amplification, commercial scale inoculum preparation, and molecular biology characterization and QC analysis of bacterial strains. The Microbiologist II will work under the direction of the MSAT (Manufacturing Sciences and Technologies) Group Leader for the Agrinos’ US Production Plant.     Job Duties & Responsibilities

    • Conduct lab scale experiments as directed for microbial fermentation process development, optimization, and new product development
    • Conduct laboratory and pre-commercial scale experiments testing new methods and technologies to modify commercial manufacturing processes which may result in new products or reduced cycle time
    • Troubleshooting of in-process fermentations: contamination testing, identification and remediation
    • Preparation of microbial media for CFU plating and small-scale process development experiments
    • Responsible for the collection of samples from validation scale-up experiments and analysis for various measurements such as pH, density, brix, etc.
    • Optimize, characterize, and validate microbial growth fermentation processes and collaborate in planning and implementation of fermentation experiments
    • Maintain thorough laboratory notebooks and create pertinent SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures)
    • Manage, analyze, and regularly report experimental data
    • Write detailed reports and present results to a multidisciplinary team while interfacing with other in-house groups and outside organizations to transfer fermentation technology
    • Maintain cell bank of bacterial strains
    • QC analysis of bacterial strains in fermentation products using qPCR & dPCR
    • Ensure the laboratory is stocked with all consumables and materials necessary to conduct day-to-day activities, and the laboratory is kept organized and uncluttered
    • Ensuring SDS collection is up-to-date and well-organized
    • Train new lab team members in the safe operation of lab equipment and proper lab protocols
    • Assist others with other Production, or QA/QC projects as needed
    • Ensure that the quality management system conforms to the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 Standards
    • Ensure that the processes are delivering their intended outputs

    Skills & Qualifications

    • 2 years’ industry experience in a microbiology, process development, biochemical engineering, fermentation science
    • Working knowledge of fermentation and microbial technologies
    • Experience preparing media and other chemical mixtures for sanitation or experimentation
    • Experience with microbial methods and assessments including plating of samples by serial dilution, pipetting, spread plate, streak plate, liquid culture, staining, visual assessments, and photography
    • Excellent aseptic technique
    • Experience conducting fermentation experiments
    • Working knowledge of a variety of microbes (bacteria, yeasts, filamentous fungi, etc.,) and a variety of fermentation processes (aerobic, microaerobic, and anaerobic)
    • Basic molecular biology skills including DNA extraction and PCR
    • Ability to multitask and collaborate in a dynamic team environment
    • Excellent written & oral communication and organization skills
    • Understanding and daily use of typical Microsoft Office software applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
    • Experience with fermentations greater than 250 L and operation of fermenters in this range and larger desired
    • Additional experience to include: qPCR or dPCR & Eppendorf BioFlo fermenters
    • BioCommand Software (or similar) preferred
    • Ability to pass pre-employment background check and physical

    Education Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree (Required) - Microbiology, biochemical engineering, fermentation science or related biological or engineering discipline
    • MS degree in microbiology, biochemical engineering, or fermentation science preferred
