PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This role will be supporting the National Weather Service (NWS), Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD) Radar Operations Center (ROC). As a member of their Engineering Branch Team, you will support the 159 Doppler weather radars that provide critical tornado and severe weather warning observations across the Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Korea. The team is involved in every phase of the hardware and software lifecycle across business and technical applications; they also provide facility support, program management, and quality assurance. This contract involves customer touch points within NWS, Department of Transportation, and the Air Force.
Job Responsibilities:
· Utilize meteorological expertise to collaborate with software developers in designing and implementing new software solutions for the NEXRAD WSR-88D radar system.
· Test and validate new software builds by applying meteorological knowledge to assess the accuracy and effectiveness of algorithms and data processing techniques.
· Provide feedback to the software development team on the performance of new features or enhancements, suggesting improvements based on meteorological requirements and industry standards.
· Develop and execute test plans and procedures to verify the functionality and reliability of radar software applications, ensuring compliance with operational standards and protocols.
· Collaborate with meteorologists, engineers, and stakeholders to identify and prioritize software requirements, ensuring alignment with operational needs and user expectations.
· Document test results, findings, and recommendations in clear and concise reports, facilitating communication between the software development team and other project stakeholders.
· Assist in troubleshooting and debugging issues related to radar software performance or functionality, offering insights and solutions based on meteorological expertise.
· Stay informed about advances in radar technology, meteorological research, and software development methodologies, integrating new knowledge and best practices into the development process.
Job Requirements:
· A Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology or related scientific field is required.
· At least one year experience providing radar meteorological services.
· Specialized experience in Doppler weather radar meteorological applications, in evaluating Doppler weather radar data and products, and in producing analytic reports.
· Experience in computer systems analysis, design, and programming.
· Experience working with Linux preferably Red Hat.
· Knowledge of procedures involved with weather radar equipment and systems, testing, certification, and validation.
· Skills in customer relations, using relational databases, computer programming, and graphical interfaces.
