Job Title: Metadata & Technical Services Librarian OR Library Assistant
Classification: Professional/Paraprofessional, part time, 20 hours/week
Reports to: JKM Library Director
Summary Description: The Metadata & Technical Services Assistant has primary responsibility for tasks related to acquiring and cataloging e-resources and print materials for the JKM Library collections and in managing the technical operations of the JKM Library. The successful candidate will have experience creating and maintaining metadata, a solid knowledge of established and emerging metadata standards, strong technical aptitude, and a strong knowledge of the Ex Libris/Alma ILS.
Areas of Responsibility
- Performs original and DLC copy cataloging for e-resources and print materials, using traditional cataloging principles and practices to input records into OCLC and the local ILS, Ex Libris/Alma
- Acquires, configures, manages licensing, maintains and supports the library’s ILS and relationship with I-Share, proxy server, online databases and e-resources.
- Serves as a resource person concerning metadata, database maintenance, record loading, workflow issues, cataloging, and classification.
- Maintains statistics and develops statistical reports for e-resources and print materials related to acquisitions, cataloging, inventory, and weeding.
- Processes materials for inclusion in collection
- Removes and/or consolidates records from catalog for weeded materials.
- Engages in in-house preservation operations as needed.
- Monitors Ex Libris/Alma listservs on behalf of the library; acts as liaison to CARLI
- Keeps current by maintaining skills in and knowledge of the latest development in emerging information technologies.
- Understands licensing and copyright issues.
- Manages PhD and DMin dissertation cataloging, indexing, and binding/uploading.
- Assists in special library projects involving the revision/updating of catalog records.
- Participates in Library staff functions and meetings and, as time permits, in LSTC and McCormick community events
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Expertise in principles and practices of bibliographic control including MARC, AACR2, LCSH, and LC classification.
- Knowledge of acquisitions and cataloging practices in an automated environment; preferably of Ex-Libris Alma library software system (ILS)
- Excellent interpersonal, analytical, organizational, project management, problem-solving, time management, and communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collegially with library and institutional colleagues.
- Strong service orientation
- Aptitude for working in a rapidly changing environment.
- Ability to do physical lifting of books and other materials; moderate physical activity such as walking, standing, bending, stretching, stooping and lifting
Education and/or Experience:
- Graduate degree from an ALA-accredited institution or current Library & Information Science student in final year of program
- Previous experience in Library technical services preferred
