GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under limited supervision, performs a wide variety of planning and technical duties for preparing professional analysis on various planning and development issues. Work involves dispensing zoning information to the public and reviewing and inspecting development plans for compliance with the zoning ordinance. Employee must also exercise considerable tact, courtesy, firmness, and professionalism in frequent contact with property owners, developers, contractors and the general public. Employee participates in current planning activities and performs related work as necessary and as directed. Provides technical assistance to the general public. Reports to the Development Services Director.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Reviews zoning permits and site plans for conformance with codes, plans, and regulations.
Assists with the development of planning studies and reports in support of new and updated plans, programs, and regulations.
Coordinates the review of development projects with the Building, Engineering, Fire, Public Works, Stormwater and Utility Departments when applicable.
Assists in the preparation and presentation of detailed reports on development proposals to elected and appointed bodies.
Evaluates or assists in re-zonings, ordinance amendments, annexations, special use permits, variances, and other proposals.
Acts as liaison between community groups, government agencies, developers, and elected officials in developing short-and long-range plans.
Provides information to the public regarding development regulations. Assists in resolving citizen and customer issues.
Performs a variety of clerical and administrative functions in support of assigned duties; filing, answering phones, preparing correspondence, etc.
Conducts field evaluations, assessments, and inspections to ensure consistency with approved development plans and/or the City’s zoning ordinance.
Attends evening meetings as needed.
Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilize word processing, etc.
Compiles and/or monitors various statistical and inspection data.
ESSENTIAL SAFETY FUNCTIONS

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in City/regional/urban planning, architecture, public policy, public administration, or a similar field is preferred, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skill, knowledge, and abilities. Must have a valid South Carolina driver's license.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines, tools and equipment, such as computers, printers, and general office equipment. Tasks require the ability to exert medium physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carry, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium weight.
