Position Overview
KU Recreation Services, a department within Student Affairs, provides a campus-wide impact at the University of Kansas by improving the quality of life for all students, faculty, staff, affiliates, retirees, alumni, spouses, and domestic partners. KU Recreation Services provides state-of-the-art recreational programs (Fitness, Intramurals, Outdoor Pursuits, and Sport Clubs), facilities, and services.
The David A. Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center (ASRFC) is a $17 million facility which opened in September 2003. In 2008, a $6.3 million expansion was completed, increasing the total indoor space to 150,000 square feet. The ASRFC is comprised of many different activity spaces: 16,000 square feet of cardiovascular resistance training and free weight equipment, six indoor basketball/volleyball courts, a three-lane suspended jogging track, an aerobics studio, a martial arts studio, three racquetball courts, one squash court, a functional fitness studio, a dasher board system gymnasium, a golf simulator, a 42-foot climbing wall and bouldering wall, two outdoor basketball courts, a conference room, and multimedia room.
Job Overview
A Facility Assistant will work in one or more of the three responsibility areas or positions within the ASRFC during a given shift. In each area, an Assistant shall enforce and implement policies and procedures or complete particular responsibilities so that the KU Recreation Services population has the opportunity to participate in desired recreational programs, facilities, and services.
Assistants are expected to work during the following periods: fall and spring semesters; and fall, winter, and spring breaks. The summer semester is optional and is covered by those who are available to work. They will also work Monday-Sunday with early morning hours (6:00A), morning, afternoon, evening, and late-night hours (ASRFC closes as late as 10:30P). Assistants are expected to work weekend hours on a regular basis through a rotation system. Each Assistant must be certified in CPR/AED or become certified within one month of appointment. The three positions an Assistant can work are: Welcome Center (access control); Equipment Check-Out (also located at the Welcome Center); and Membership Services Assistant. General Responsibilities and Expectations

Complete of all duties assigned by Facility Supervisors, Facility Program Manager and KU Recreation Services administrative staff.

Maintain effective and appropriate communication with participants, guests, co-workers, and administration.

Cover/Trade shifts for co-workers when needed and when able.

Greet participants/members in a positive manner upon entering the Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center

Maintain a high level of integrity and consistency when making decisions, actions, and enforcement of policies and procedures

Attend all scheduled meetings and shifts on time, while being ready to learn while at work.

Act with personal responsibility.

Implement risk management procedures and protocols when necessary.

Enforce departmental policies and procedures

Maintain clean working areas, including the Welcome Center, equipment check-out, laundry room, restrooms, lobby and foyers of the ASRFC (dusting, cleaning, and sanitizing windows, ledges, counters, tables, and equipment).

Create a welcoming environment to all members and guests.

Provide a high-quality member service experience.

Enforce access policies to confirm an active membership by scanning of KUIDs, ASRFC membership IDs, Fusion Access barcodes, or manually looking up a member.

Disseminate KU Recreation Services marketing materials while assisting participants with general facility information.

Book Racquetball/Squash reservations as needed.

Answer phone calls and providing accurate KU Recreation Services information

Check out sport and/or fitness equipment.
Equipment Check-Out
-
Provide a high-quality member service experience.

Assist members with check out and check in of equipment and informing them of our policies when checking out equipment.

Collecting and documenting broken equipment for follow up.

Operating and maintaining washing machines and dryers.

Folding and maintaining laundry.

Booking Racquetball or Squash courts reservations.
Membership Services
-
Ability to learn KU Recreation Services point of sale software to include, but not limited to, member profiles, guest passes, membership sales, locker sales, programming sales, etc

Collection and distribution of incoming mail and packages
-
Ability to screen phone calls to appropriate professional staff within KU Recreation Services
-
Responsible for the opening and closing procedures of the Administrative Office as necessary

Ability to manage potential facility access issues
-
Willingness to assist KU Professional staff with various projects and tasks
-
Ability to learn KU Parking Office software to distribute temporary parking passes for Ambler access
Required Qualifications
- Enrolled in 6 credit hours or more at the University of Kansas

Exhibited good oral communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
