The employee performs intermediate professional and technical work in assembling and analyzing social, economic, and other data for city planning activities; does related work as required.The work of this class involves responsibility for the performance of routine to moderately difficult technical work in city planning under the supervision of the Department Director. Supervision may be exercised over various staff technicians. Independent judgment is exercised in the application of professional techniques and principles to recurring problems, which do not go beyond the bounds of, established departmental rules, standards, and policies. Supervision is received from a superior who reviews work through consultation and analysis of reports prepared. Essential Functions of Position:
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: General knowledge of the principles and practices of city planning; some knowledge of the city charter and of the various ordinances, codes, and regulations pertaining to planning and zoning; general knowledge of the techniques required in the preparation of maps, charts, sketches and complex graphics; general knowledge of the principles of research, and of standard sources and uses of socio‑economic information; general knowledge of research methodology and of standard statistical procedures; ability to plan, organize and carry out moderately complex research projects independently and effectively; ability to select and apply proper research methodology; ability to present results of research effectively in oral, written, and graphic form; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, municipal officials, representatives of other agencies and the general public. Ability to meet deadlines and keep projects on schedule. Extended periods of sitting at a workstation or desk. Manual dexterity to work efficiently on computer keyboards for data entry. Ability to speak clearly.
Acceptable Experience and Training: Graduation from a college or university of recognized standing with major course work in planning or one of the social or engineering sciences; Masters degree in planning or design discipline with AICP certification is preferred; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Specialized knowledge or experience in at least one other discipline, such as design, physical geography, geology, civil engineering, traffic engineering, economics, or political science, is desired. Post offer physical and drug screening required.
