Job Summary

Under the immediate direction of the Supervisor or Laboratory Operations Manager, perform low, moderate and high complexity patient testing. Provide guidance to staff to assure appropriate clinical training and competency review. Serve as the primary technical consultant, provide resolution to client issues, and maintain customer service and support. Perform QA monitoring and documentation, proficiency testing evaluation, and assist with evaluating new assays and/or equipment. Assist supervisor and manager in planning section goals and procedures for accomplishing goals. Work in conjunction with the Supervisor or Laboratory Operations Manager to oversee the laboratory in his/her absence and to assure a focus and commitment to the laboratory’s goals and mission.

Minimal Acceptable Job Qualifications

Licensure / Certification:

• MT, CLS, MLT certification or equivalent preferred, but not required.

Experience:

• Minimum 3-5 years recent clinical laboratory experience with progressively more responsibility in a specified department or area of the laboratory operations.

Education:

• Associate or Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in molecular or biological science, chemistry, and mathematics (meeting the hours for each as mandated by the CLIA requirements for a medical technologist).

Job Knowledge & Skills

• Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient’s test results.
• Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens. Monitor acceptability of the proficiency sample results.
• Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibration and maintenance performed.
• Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
• Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or immediately notify the laboratory specialist.
• Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
