Medical Records Technician abstracts clinical information from medical records and assigns the appropriate ICD or CPT codes using industry-standard coding guidelines. Assigns required DRG (diagnosis-related grouping) codes. Being a Medical Records Technician works with coding databases and software to input and maintain data according to standard procedures. Performs quality audits of work. Additionally, Medical Records Technician maintains and up-to-date knowledge of coding and documentation requirements. Does not require a medical coding certification. Requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Records Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area.   • Duties

    • Ensures that coding is performed in a manner which allows input of data into the computer system.
    • Codes disease and injury diagnoses, acuity of care, and procedures in a wide range of ambulatory settings and specialties.
    • Performs qualitative analysis to ensure accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of recorded data
    • Contacts appropriate medical staff members to rectify inconsistencies, deficiencies and discrepancies in medical documentation.
    • Provides assistance to medical staff by researching reference materials for requested information

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.     Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes coding disease and injury diagnosis; providing assistance to professional staff; OR gathering data to produce reports; and/or performing analysis of records to ensure recorded data is accurate. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

    This position recommends that you be a Registered Record Administrator (RRA) or certified by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Technician (RHIT), or be a certified coding specialist CCS, or CCS-P, or credentialed by American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) CPC Certified Professional Coder, CPC-H or CPC-P.
