Medical Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. POSITION SUMMARY:
Primarily responsible for interpreting health information between English and Spanish for clients receiving preventive health services at the Tulsa Health Department.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following functions represent the majority of the duties performed by the position, but is not meant to be all-inclusive or prevent other duties from being assigned when necessary:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (100% of Time):
11. Assists in all clinic programs as needed to improve patient flow by scheduling appointments for clients.
12. Communicates with clients through phone calls with appointment reminder information and instructions.
13. Act as liaison for the Health Department in conjunction with contract physician for tubal ligations and vasectomies
14. Coordinate patient contact and referrals with Family Planning nurse
15. Assists with application and completion of SoonerCare plan for eligible clients
16. Assists with clerical duties as needed: answering phones, scheduling appointments, pulling and filing charts, making copies, and sending faxes
17. Completes required training in support of duties and responsibilities
18. Other duties as assigned including those required to fulfill activities in support of public health emergency operations.
