Medical Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families. Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed. Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. Overall responsibilities are to provide communication assistance via sign language interpreting to the deaf and hard of hearing students in and out of the classroom as assigned.
Level I Interpreter Certification (TSID or RID) or meet ADA qualifications standard.
One year experience preferred.
Proficiency in communication and interpretation between the hearing-impaired and the non-hearing impaired. Understanding of a person with deafness preferred form of communication. Show interest, enthusiasm, empathy, and a desire to help others. Have good interpersonal skills, and must be able to communicate effectively both written and orally.
Hours will vary between 7:30 a.m. – 10:00 p.m, seven days a week as needed. Job location may vary from Main Campus, Fort Hood Campus, and other locations as needed in CTC service areas.
