Being a Medical Interpreter advises medical personnel about any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards. Additionally, Medical Interpreter may be required to translate written documents. Requires familiarity with medical terminology. Requires fluency in one or more languages in addition to English. May require an associate degree or equivalent. May require Translation certificate. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Medical Interpreter works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. Duties:
- Interpret spoken communication in court proceedings accurately and impartially
- Translate written documents such as legal forms and evidence
- Maintain confidentiality and neutrality throughout interpretation sessions
- Assist with cultural nuances to ensure effective communication
- Provide consecutive or simultaneous interpretation as needed
Skills:
- Proficiency in multiple languages, including English and at least one other language
- Knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures
- Strong communication skills to convey complex information clearly
- Ability to remain impartial and unbiased during interpretation
- Understanding of confidentiality laws such as HIPAA
- Familiarity with child protective services, social work, or medical environments
- Experience in interpreting for hospitals or medical settings is a plus
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) is advantageous
