Medical Assistant assists in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician. Interviews patients, measures vital signs (i.e., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and records or inputs information to patients' medical records. Being a Medical Assistant prepares treatment rooms for the examination of patients. May draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis. Additionally, Medical Assistant may perform administrative duties such as ordering supplies, answering the phone, and scheduling appointments. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RCA) certification. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Medical Assistant works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. To be a Medical Assistant typically requires 1-3 years of related experience. (Copyright 2024 Salary.com)

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT MEDICAL ASSISTANT

  • General Description:

    The Medical Assistant, as a member of the Emergency Department team, is responsible for ensuring that timely and safe care of the highest quality is available to all patients in the Emergency Departments. S/he provides safe, prudent, economical patient care in compliance with GRMC standards of nursing care. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively articulate and explain required information to patients. Promotes and adheres to all regulatory and safety standards; OSHA. Maintains required certifications and core competencies.  

    Essential Functions:

    • Verifies patient information by using double identifiers, places ID bands and allergy bands, reviews medical history, medication reconciliation, taking vital signs, and confirming purpose of visit or treatment.
    • Handles laboratory specimens such as blood and other bodily fluids.
    • Assists the physician/practitioner/nurse in procedures as needed.
    • Communicates patient’s needs with the physician/practitioner/nurse utilizing appropriate means of communication.
    • Maintains accurate, legible, and confidential records, and documents in EMR.
    • Ensures that clinical areas of the practice are clean and appropriately stocked.
    • Assists patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as toileting, dressings, ambulation, and transfers.
    • Maintains a safe and comfortable therapeutic clinic environment, maintaining clinic and patient confidentiality and quality standards. Ensures that infection control and other patient safety procedures are followed.
    • The physician/practitioner may delegate reasonable and prudent medical acts for the MA to perform under the physician/practitioner direct supervision. Competencies to be assessed by physician/practitioner or delegated to the Emergency Department Director.
    • Educates patients and their families or caregivers concerning preventative health, treatment options, and community resources, to ensure optimal healthcare outcomes.
    • Supports bi-directional electronic clinical data exchange by sending and/or reconciling health information within scope of licensure/certification.
    • Administer, score and interpret the Healthy Lifestyle Questionnaire results and provide a brief intervention to ED patients identified for substance misuse to support reduction in alcohol and drug consumption.
    • Offer a treatment program resource and schedule a community referral to treatment.
    • Documents screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment timely in the EMR.
    • Ability to serve mentally ill and chemically dependent patients of all ages and of all cultural backgrounds in the routine performance of duties.

    Education & Training Requirements:

    • High School Diploma or GED
    • Certified Medical Assistant in the State of New Mexico
    • BLS (American Heart Association) certification
    • Life Link training institute NM-SBIRT Certification for ER within 30 days of hire or earliest available
