    Job Description

    The Camp Program Director is responsible for oversight of multiple program areas/duties and/or provides guidance, support, and work direction to camp leads and camp counselors. Examples may include but are not limited to, Cabin and Program Counselors, Unit Leaders, Program Coordinators, etc. The incumbent provides high quality experiences for campers that focus on the YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. In addition to overnight camp, the Camp Program Director will also oversee all camp rentals and special groups. Position will work very closely with the Outdoor School Director and the Camp Facility Manager.

    Qualifications

    • Two summers previous camp staff experience or equivalent preferred.
    • Experience in the development and delivery of summer camp programs and activities.
    • Specialized and practical knowledge of/ experience in: cabin leadership, child behavior, peer leadership and supervision, staff management & motivation.
    • Integrity, patience, adaptability, sense of humor, enthusiasm, and a commitment to serve youth.
    • Ability to train, motivate, support, share insights & ideas with, and supervise resident camp staff; communicate openly with supervisor; organize, facilitate, and evaluate camp, unit, and other activities; support and connect with campers; perform duties as specified in job description and by supervisor; behave as an appropriate positive role model in all camp activities.
    • Current CPR/AED certifications required. Online trainings and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date. First Aid preferred.
    • Lifeguard certification strongly preferred. Ability to get certified after hire if interested.
    • Must successfully pass a background check.

    Essential Functions

    • Promote a positive environment that fosters safety, fun, and our YMCA values, whilst uphold, model, and enforce camp policies and code of conduct.
    • Ensure camp is functional, well-maintained, safe, and clean for all participants before arrival. Inspect activity areas to ensure no hazards are present and sets boundaries for the safety and well-being of the participants.
    • Organize and prepare facilities for special rental events, family camps, summer resident camp, outdoor school, and all other camp/conference functions.
    • Develop and cultivate relationships with volunteers and potential future work force.
    • Supervise staff which will include: coaching, teaching, modeling, reinforcing, assisting with difficult situations and correcting behavior. Also, establishing, communicating and positively reinforcing performance standards for staff.
    • Make a conscious effort to get to know staff as individuals: interests, working style, strengths, areas for improvement, putting a conscious effort into ensuring that it is an impactful, enjoyable summer for staff too.
    • Help facilitate daily programing and activities. Add creativity and variety to the camp programs by playing an integral part of the daily activity planning and oversight.
    • Assist in the completion of administrative duties for all camp programs throughout the year including learning and utilizing Daxko.
    • Treat weekend programs with same mentality and standard as normal camp sessions.
    • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in all program areas.
    • Actively market, promote and secure rental groups such as family retreats, wedding parties, church groups, corporate groups, service clubs, etc.
    • Work within all established spending policies, adhering to operating budget restrictions.
    • Models the YMCA Core Values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Maintain a positive role model attitude.
    • Do a variety of office/administrative duties including: Helping families with camp registration, managing staff timecards, making social media posts, record keeping for activities, managing health forms, sending rental contracts, and managing the camp email.
    • Communicate effectively with families and parents regarding participant’s experiences and provide appropriate feedback and information as needed for their campers to have a successful camp experience.
    • Must step into a number of roles when needed and be willing to help in any format to promote the success of all programs. Could include cleaning bathrooms, doing dishes, assisting in the kitchen, cleaning up program areas, doing routine grounds keeping, etc.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
