Mechanical Designer designs and creates layouts and documentation for HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and other mechanical building systems that meet project and technical specifications. Uses computer-aided design (CAD) and other specialized software tools to generate detailed layout plans, schematics, and drawings for mechanical systems. Being a Mechanical Designer maintains accurate and complete change and version control on all design files, documents, and drawings. Incorporates best practices to address design space constraints and ensure compliance with industry standards, safety requirements, and building codes. Additionally, Mechanical Designer collaborates with engineers and other project members. May conduct or participate in site visits to inspect installations or troubleshoot problems. May require an associate degree in mechanical design, drafting or equivalent. Typically reports to a manager. Kolene Corporation is a family-owned company celebrating 84 years in business. We design and build large industrial equipment for the government, steel mills, aerospace industry, and many others. We are looking for a Mechanical Designer to help plan and coordinate designated projects, including analyzing design requirements and recommending possible solutions or alternate constructions. This role also identifies potential operational issues and redesigns products to improve functionality. The designer work closely with other mechanical designers, our VP of Engineering, and other departmental personnel.
Ideal candidates will have an A.S. or B.S. in engineering or equivalent successful mechanical drawing experience, preferably working with large industrial equipment. They must be dependable, results-oriented, and demonstrate strong attention to detail to successfully move from design concept to finished design. Candidates must be proficient in reading/understanding schematics or blueprints, demonstrate basic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, a strong work ethic, possess effective communication skills, and be able to write detailed operational procedures for customer manuals. Candidates should understand and be able to accomplish job functions using corporate standards (NFPA 86 and NFPA 70 standards) and consistently be able to meet deadlines. Candidates must be proficient in the use of CAD and have knowledge of SolidWorks or 3D; experience is a plus.
Candidate must be aware of standard safety practices while in a fabrication shop environment, be able to successfully complete all necessary safety training, and be able to demonstrate safe practices at all times. This position may require long periods of sitting at a desk and effectively working on a computer, the ability to stand for extended periods of time on concrete floors, and ability to access and inspect all areas of machinery. They must be able to work in noisy, dusty, and hot/cold conditions for limited periods wearing proper PPE in order to review equipment and discuss design changes. Other physical requirements include ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 25 lbs.; vision ability includes using close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception regularly.
