Introduction
Sputtering Components Inc. (SCI) in Owatonna is a Company in southern Minnesota that has served customers all around the world for over 20 years. Every day, millions of people come in contact with products made using Sputtering Components equipment. Our thin film technologies are used in vacuum coating systems to make windows, smartphones, display screens, solar panels, automobile components, decorative hardware and more.
We are currently seeking a Mechanical Designer who would be responsible for applying knowledge of engineering principles to design and detail products. The Mechanical Designer reports to the Design Team Manager and will work closely with other design and engineering staff in carrying out the design goals of the company. Success in this position relies on experience, judgement, and creativity to plan and accomplish goals.

Tasks
- Works with customers, Application Engineers, and Controls Engineers with regard to specifications and approval of customized equipment designs
- Generates designs and drawings of customized products and equipment based on standard SCI components
- Responsible for resolving and testing mechanical and fabrication problems associated with their design
- Research purchased parts specific to product or customer applications
- Provides technical support to manufacturing
- Responsible for cost estimation of purchased and manufactured parts
- Attending meetings and providing input and updates
- Other duties as assigned
Required qualifications
- Associate’s Degree in Engineering or related field and 10 years of equipment design experience, BS plus 5-years experience, or 15-years of experience
- Knowledge of vacuum industry preferred but not required
- Knowledge of 3-D CAD required, Solid Works preferred, Solid Edge knowledge a plus
- Ability to create electrical drawings a plus
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Must have the ability to work in a “team” environment
- Experience in manufacturing industry
- Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods
- Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures of drafting, including weld symbols and basic knowledge of geometric tolerance
- Able to read, understand and mark up electrical drawings is preferred
- Superb creativity, vision, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and self-confidence
- Extensive experience working on engineering projects
- Ability to make decisions in high-stress situations
- Great written and verbal communication skills
