Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class coordinates and prepares planning activities which involve the physical and economic future of the City. Work includes administering, interpreting, and enforcing the City’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), staffing the Planning Board, Board of Adjustment, and providing frequent information to the City Council; assisting programs for community and downtown development; facilitating citizen participation on planning and community issues; preparing maps and resources for planning related date. Work involves coordination with a variety of other local and state jurisdictions and agencies and considerable knowledge of the planning field and local ordinances, and extensive public contact skills. Work is performed in an office environment under the general supervision of the Development Services Director and is evaluated through conferences, reports, and progress on planning issues and projects.
Essential Duties and Tasks
Assisting with the coordination and preparation of planning activities; conducting research; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.
Interprets and enforces Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) and related ordinances; will assist other staff in activities such as enforcing zoning regulations, issuing zoning permits, sending out certification notices, public hearing notices and letters and violation letters.
Reviews site plans; reviews subdivision plats, special use applications and variance applications.
Reviews development proposals and evaluates them for compliance with local ordinances.
Researches, writes and recommends ordinances related to zoning, subdivision regulations, appearance, economic development and other growth and development issues.
Develops data bases and performs special studies on a variety of planning issues such as zoning, land use, transportation, annexation feasibility and related planning issues.
Confers with homeowners, developers, a variety of agencies and the general public in obtaining information and coordinating planning matters; coordinates activities with County and surrounding jurisdictions; participates in plan review process.
Responds to and resolves difficult citizens' inquiries and complaints regarding planning matters. Prepares maps using GIS; performs data analysis for GIS; creates new layers.
