Materials Management Supervisor supervises daily operations and planning to optimize the flow of raw materials, supplies, and equipment from initial procurement to the final disposition and fulfill material requirements for volume, cost, and scheduling business operations. Uses material requirement plans to ensure the required flow of materials is maintained. Being a Materials Management Supervisor coordinates procurement, warehouse, and distribution operations and staffing to enable workflows crucial to the flow of materials. Troubleshoots and resolves operational roadblocks. Additionally, Materials Management Supervisor may require a bachelor's degree in area of specialty. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Materials Management Supervisor supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be a Materials Management Supervisor typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.     The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Southcoast Region Design and Engineering Services Division is looking for a Materials Laboratory Technician, Sub-Journey 4 in Juneau to help us Keep Alaska Moving!


    What you will be doing:

    Performs a wide variety of materials testing (including AASHTO proficiency testing) to determine physical properties and classification of soils, aggregates, concrete, and bituminous mixes. 

    Maintains, calibrates, and performs general repairs of laboratory equipment in accordance with AASHTO Laboratory Accreditation, and achieves and remains current in WAQTC industry standard certification program.

    Reviews documents in AASHTO R-18 for guidance and ensures that the lab test equipment calibrations are completed according to the requirements provided by the AASHTO Reference Materials Lab (resource) program.

    This position reports to the Department of Transportation & Public Facilites, Southcoast Region, 7-mile office located in Juneau. Work will be conducted will be in an office environment though teleworking may be an option on an occasional (situational) basis.

    • Materials Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the composition, structures, and properties of materials, their use, behavior and performance under environmental influences, and the identification, processing, and manufacture of optimal materials for various applications.

    • Adaptability: adjusts planned work by gathering relevant information and applying critical thinking to address multiple demands and competing priorities in a changing environment.

    • Research: Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct systematic and objective material sample collection, testing, reporting, and interpretation of results.

    • Reading: Understands and interprets written material, including technical material, rules, regulations, instructions, reports, charts, graphs, or tables; applies what is learned from written material to specific situations.


    Special note:
    • A valid driver's license is required.
    • The encumbent must be certified in at least 2 modules of WAQTC, which is a condition of hire and within two years must be certfied in all 5 modules of WAQTC. This is a requirement of the Alaska DOT&PF Construction manual for all materials testing technicians.
