Materials Handling Supervisor supervises and coordinates the work of employees who load and unload material within a warehouse or storage facility. Processes orders from requisitions and dispenses items from stock. Being a Materials Handling Supervisor oversees the utilization of hand trucks, forklifts, hoists, conveyors, or other handling equipment to move material to and from aircraft, trucks or trains and within the storage facility. Prepares work schedules, assigns work, and oversees the work product. Additionally, Materials Handling Supervisor ensures procedures are according to specifications and that resources are used effectively and work schedules and targets are met. May assist in inventory of stock and stock rotation. Enters information into a computerized system to maintain up-to-date stock records, retrieve stored data, or respond to inquiries about inventory levels or delivery schedules. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a manager. The Materials Handling Supervisor supervises a small group of para-professional staff in an organization characterized by highly transactional or repetitive processes. Contributes to the development of processes and procedures. Thorough knowledge of functional area under supervision.   • As the evening Supervisor of Materials Management, your skills and expertise will be necessary to lead a team of hardworking individuals in order to maintain supply chain needs for the Hospital. Our Materials Management team supports the needs of the Hospital to ensure that all inventory and necessary equipment is provided to our healthcare providers so that our patients can receive the reliable and quality care they deserve. As the Supervisor for Materials Management, you will work under the supervision of the Manager and the Director in order to provide the support needed for your team and for other departments.

    What You Will Do:

    • Attends and actively participates in hospital or medical performance improvement councils and committees as requested.
    • Proactively communicates with staff and keeps them informed on a regular basis or as needed; updates staff regarding policy changes in specialized areas.
    • Develops and utilizes department policy statements, scope of service, quality indicators and updates; revises as necessary.
    • Performs staff management functions related to employee selection, on-boarding/orientation, coaching/development, staffing, work assignments, performance management and goal alignment as guided by hospital policy and procedures and collective bargaining unit agreement (when applicable).
    • Participates, collaborates and actively engages in meetings to achieve goals and mutually beneficial outcomes.
    • Conducts regular staff meetings to disseminate hospital and/or department/division information and allows for discussion of staff concerns needing clarification or resolution.
    • Maintains thorough knowledge of, and enforces all procedures, routines and practices in the department.
    • Assigns tasks to subordinate personnel on a daily basis, identifying priorities based on the immediate needs of the area and readjusts these assignments to meet unexpected demands; guides, advises and observes technicians as needed in order to complete these assignments.
    • Provides schedules of time for his/her subordinates ensuring adequate and consistent staffing coverage for the area at all times.
    • Executes periodic written evaluations on his/her staff making both positive and negatives notes as well as recommendations for improvement or change.
    • Counsels employees as required. If warranted, meets with HR to review and initiate appropriate disciplinary action.
    • Effectively communicates upwards, downwards and laterally; gives accurate, pertinent and timely reports to oncoming supervisors indicating any needs/problems for the next shift; relates well with interdepartmental personnel as both a resource person and problem-solver, always maintaining customer focus.
    • Authorizes and arranges transactions with other departments or hospitals, as required.
    • Assists in the orientation of new employees and documents accurate notes reflective of their progress; makes provisions for the further development and on-the-job training of his/her subordinates.
    • Oversees special projects: implements revisions of instrument trays, carts, preventive maintenance programs and departmental procedures.
    • Collects and compiles records and/or statistical data reflective of workloads, equipment usage, etc. compares this data to hours worked for staffing and productivity purposes.
    • Controls the inventory of supplies needed and recommends items for re-order at appropriate times; encourages the efficient use of supplies and equipment, reducing costs if at all possible.
    • Routinely makes rounds on the clinical areas noting stock levels, expiration dates, etc., and evaluates the service provided to the area by Materials Management / Sterile Reprocessing department personnel.
    • Submits recommendations for the department budget, specifically personnel and equipment requirements; establishes goals and objectives for his/her area.
    • Ensures proper use of departmental and patient-care equipment, maximizing safety; ensures the proper maintenance of this equipment.
    • Strives for maximum quantity and maximum quality of work from his/her staff; participates in the quality assurance program for the department, completes audits and maintains records, as required.
    • Attends and participates in supervisory and committee meetings, as instructed; develops agendas and conducts meetings with the technical staff, holds weekly in-services, records accurate and concise minutes of same.
    • Assumes responsibility of the entire department over weekends and on holidays, maintaining an "on-call" status, as scheduled.
    • Performs in the role of technician if necessary.
    • Continues to develop oneself and keeps informed; sets a good example for others.
    • Attends appropriate continuing education programs
    • Identifies the everyday needs of the department, e.g. supplies, repairs, and educational programs, and takes the necessary steps to fill these needs.
    • Assumes other duties as assigned by department leadership.

    What It Takes:

    Required:

    • Associates Degree in a medical or business field
    • 2 years as a Central Service technician with some exposure to all areas of the department.
    • Experience with inventory management to include conducting physical inventories annual, special, and cycle.
    • Knowledge of medical terminology

    Preferred:

    • Certified in Field
    • Experience with MMIS use and analytics using Microsoft Office
    • Experience with Lawson and Microsoft Add Ins
